- Indolalkaloide bilden die größte Alkaloidgruppe. Zu ihr gehören weit mehr als 1000 Vertreter. Charakterisiert sind sie durch den Indol- oder Indolin-(2,3-Dihydroindol-)-Grundkörper. Entsprechend ihrer biogenetischen Herkunft aus Tryptophan tragen sie fast alle in Stellung 3 des Indolringes einen 2-Aminoethylrest, der meistens in einen oder mehrere, am Indol anellierte Ringe integriert ist. Beispiele: Ajmalin, Ergotamin, Yohimbin, Reserpin, Strychnin, Ibogain Einige Vertreter entstehen durch Verknüpfung von zwei substituierten Indolgrundkörpern. Containing more than 4100 known different compounds, it is one of the largest classes of alkaloids. Many of them possess significant physiological activity and some of them are used in medicine.
