- Germaine Luise Krull (20 November 1897 – 31 July 1985) was a photographer, political activist, and hotel owner. Her nationality has been categorized as German, French, and Dutch, but she spent years in Brazil, Republic of the Congo, Thailand, and India. Described as "an especially outspoken example" of a group of early 20th-century female photographers who "could lead lives free from convention", she is best known for photographically illustrated books such as her 1928 portfolio Métal. - Germaine Krull, née le 29 novembre 1897 à Wilda-Poznań (Pologne, pourtant la ville se trouvait en Prusse) et morte le 31 juillet 1985 à Wetzlar (Allemagne), est une photographe d’origine allemande, figure essentielle du mouvement de la Nouvelle Vision photographique. Sa notoriété s’est essentiellement construite à Paris dans les années 1928 à 1931, notamment avec la publication de son portfolio Métal, reçu comme un manifeste de la Nouvelle Photographie et associé par la critique au constructivisme de László Moholy-Nagy. Engagée dans l’aventure du magazine VU, premier grand hebdomadaire illustré français, elle contribue aussi à inventer le reportage photographique moderne en compagnie notamment d’André Kertész et d’Éli Lotar. Elle a également un rôle pionnier dans le domaine du livre photographique. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale Krull rejoint Brazzaville afin de se mettre au service de la France libre. Elle y crée un service photographique et réalise des reportages de propagande. Correspondante de guerre, elle suit le débarquement des Alliés de Naples à Strasbourg, arrive en Allemagne au moment de la libération du camp de concentration de Vaihingen et part ensuite pour l’Asie du Sud-Est, de Saigon à Bangkok. À la fin de son contrat de reporter elle décide de rester à Bangkok où elle dirige de 1946 à 1966 l’hôtel Oriental, dont elle fait un des plus réputés d’Asie. Parallèlement elle entreprend de photographier le patrimoine bouddhique de Thaïlande et de Birmanie. Avec André Malraux elle fait le projet, inabouti, d’un ouvrage sur l'Asie dans la collection L’univers de formes des éditions Gallimard. En 1968 elle part en Inde, réalise Tibetans in India, livre sur les Tibétains réfugiés en Inde, et s’installe au nord de l’Inde, près de Dehradun, au sein de la communauté bouddhique de Sakya Trizin. Elle quitte l’Inde en 1983 et vit chez sœur à Wetzlar jusqu’à sa mort. (fr)

Ze was bevriend met veel bekende figuren uit haar tijd en maakte portretfoto's van onder andere Sergej Eisenstein, Walter Benjamin, André Malraux, Jean Cocteau en Colette, die vaak zonder vermelding van haar naam gepubliceerd werden.
