Es deckt alle Zeitepochen in der ägyptischen Geschichte ab. Es ist Teil des Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), das direkt dem französischen Minister für nationale Bildung und Forschung untersteht. Die Grabungs- und Forschungsergebnisse werden in zahlreichen Büchern und Zeitschriften veröffentlicht. Das Forschungsinstitut wurde am 28. The IFAO is under the authority of the French Ministry for National Education, Advanced Instruction, and Research. - L'Institut français d'archéologie orientale (ou Ifao) est un institut français de recherche en archéologie établi au Caire (Égypte), appartenant au Réseau des écoles françaises à l'étranger. C'est la première institution scientifique française implantée en Égypte. L'Ifao est par son statut un établissement public à caractère scientifique, culturel et professionnel, placé sous l'autorité du ministère de l'éducation nationale, de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche. Ses champs de recherche concernent l'archéologie, l'histoire et la philologie des différentes civilisations s'étant succédé en Égypte. L'Institut possède une bibliothèque qui compte plus de 80 000 volumes, et un service des archives, créé en 1972, regroupant les archives photographiques et scientifiques de tous les chantiers de l’Institut depuis cette date jusqu’à nos jours, ainsi que la conservation d’archives plus anciennes. Les membres scientifiques, anciennement désignés « pensionnaires », sont nommés pour une durée d'un an, renouvelable trois fois au plus, par le ministre de l'Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de l'Innovation, sur proposition du conseil scientifique de l'établissement, après avis d'une commission d'admission. Les membres scientifiques relèvent de deux sections : la première regroupe les études égyptologiques et papyrologiques, la seconde les études coptes, arabes et islamiques. (fr)

- Het Institut français d'archéologie orientale (of IFAO) is een Frans instituut voor archeologisch onderzoek gevestigd in Caïro (Egypte). Het behoort tot een netwerk van Franse scholen in het buitenland en is de eerste in Egypte gevestigde Franse wetenschappelijke instelling. Het IFAO is een openbare instelling met een wetenschappelijk, cultureel en professioneel karakter en staat onder het gezag van het Ministerie van Onderwijs, Hoger Onderwijs en Onderzoek. Het instituut houdt zich vooral bezig met de archeologie, de geschiedenis en de filologie van verschillende Oud-Egyptische beschavingen. Het beschikt over een bibliotheek met meer dan 80.000 volumes en een aantal archieven. De archieven zijn in 1972 opgericht en hebben als doel het samenbrengen van de wetenschappelijke en fotografische archieven van alle projecten van het instituut van de oprichting tot nu. Ook heeft het zich belast met het behoud van de oudste archieven. Wetenschappers worden benoemd voor een periode van een jaar door de minister van Onderwijs, Hoger Onderwijs en Onderzoek, op voorstel van de wetenschappelijke raad van de instelling, na overleg een toelatingscommissie. De wetenschappelijke leden kunnen twee achtergronden hebben: egyptologie en papyrologie of Koptische, Arabische en Islamitische studies. De benoeming kan tot drie keer verlengd worden. (nl)
