- Fantastic art is a broad and loosely defined art genre. It is not restricted to a specific school of artists, geographical location or historical period. It can be characterised by subject matter – which portrays non-realistic, mystical, mythical or folkloric subjects or events – and style, which is representational and naturalistic, rather than abstract – or in the case of magazine illustrations and similar, in the style of graphic novel art such as manga. Fantasy has been an integral part of art since its beginnings, but has been particularly important in mannerism, magic realist painting, romantic art, symbolism, surrealism and lowbrow. In French, the genre is called le fantastique, in English it is sometimes referred to as visionary art, grotesque art or mannerist art. It has had a deep and circular interaction with fantasy literature. The subject matter of fantastic art may resemble the product of hallucinations, and Fantastic artist Richard Dadd spent much of his life in mental institutions. Salvador Dalí famously said: "the only difference between me and a madman is that I am not mad". Some recent fantastic art draws on the artist's experience, or purported experience, of hallucinogenic drugs. The term fantasy art is closely related, and is applied primarily to recent art (typically 20th century on wards) inspired by, or illustrating fantasy literature. Fantastic art has traditionally been largely confined to painting and illustration, but since the 1970s has increasingly been found also in photography. Fantastic art explores fantasy, imagination, the dream state, the grotesque, visions and the uncanny, as well as so-called "Goth" and "Dark" art. (en)

- Fantastische kunst is geen kunststroming, maar een benaming die men geeft aan fantasievolle kunstwerken. Men kan daarom beter spreken van het fantastische in de kunst. Er zijn zowel kunststromingen als kunstobjecten (dit laatste apart gezien van de kunststromingen waar zij tot behoren) die refereren aan de Fantastische kunst. De kunststromingen die het meest overeenkomen met de eigenschappen van de Fantastische kunst zijn het maniërisme, het symbolisme, het surrealisme en het dadaïsme. Tradizionalmente è stato per lo più ristretto al campo della pittura e dell'illustrazione, ma dagli anni settanta del XX secolo si è esteso sempre di più anche al campo della fotografia. L'arte fantastica esplora la fantasia, l'immaginazione, il sogno, le grottesche e strane visioni. Condivide spesso con il simbolismo la scelta di temi come la mitologia, l'occultismo e il misticismo, ed in genere cerca di descrivere la vita interiore. La fantasia è stata parte integrante di quest'arte fin dai suoi inizi, ma è stata particolarmente importante nel manierismo, nell'arte romantica, nel simbolismo, nel surrealismo, nella corrente del realismo magico e nel lowbrow. Al periodo manierista è da ascrivere la realizzazione del Parco dei Mostri di Bomarzo, singolare esempio di scultura e di architettura fantastica. C'è una profonda e stretta interazione con la letteratura fantasy. In francese, il genere è definito con il termine "fantastique", in inglese visionary art, grotesque art o mannerist art. (it)
- Arte fantástica é um gênero de arte não muito bem definido,que demonstra a fantasia. Acredita-se que o primeiro artista "fantástico" tenha sido Hieronymus Bosch. Outros artistas que foram definidos como fantásticos são Brueghel, , Matthias Grünewald, Hans Baldung Grien, Francisco de Goya, Gustave Moreau, Henry Fuseli, Odilon Redon, Max Klinger, Arnold Böcklin, William Blake, Gustave Doré, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Rob Gonsalves e Salvador Dalí. A fantasia tem sido uma parte integrante da arte desde seus primórdios, mas foi particularmente importante para o maneirismo, a arte romântica, o simbolismo e o surrealismo. A arte fantástica celebra a fantasia, a imaginação, o mundo dos sonhos, o grotesco, visões e outros mundanismos. Com o simbolismo ela divide a escolha de temas tais como a mitologia, o ocultismo e o misticismo. Em francês o gênero é chamado "le fantastique"; em inglês é algumas vezes referido como arte visionária, arte grotesca ou arte maneirista.
