También se llama When I am laid in earth (Cuando yazga en la tierra). El héroe troyano Eneas deja la ciudad de Cartago a pesar del amor compartido con la reina Dido. Ella, sabiendo que no puede vivir sin Eneas, decide suicidarse inmolándose en una hoguera. Irónicamente, el camino que toma el barco de Eneas es iluminado por el fuego. Dido dice sus últimas palabras a su leal doncella, Belinda, antes de morir. El aria, hecha en forma de chacona y lamento, es cantada por una soprano, un contratenor o una mezzosoprano. Het stuk is het dramatisch hoogtepunt van diens opera Dido and Aeneas, waarvoor de Iers-Engelse toneelschrijver Nahum Tate het libretto schreef. De opera is gebaseerd op de Aeneis van Vergilius. Het recitatief wordt - naar de beginwoorden - ook wel Thy hand, Belinda genoemd, terwijl de aria ook wel - eveneens naar de beginwoorden - voorkomt onder de naam When I'm laid of When I'm laid in earth. De aria geldt in de muziekwetenschap als een voorbeeld van een passacaglia, een muziekstuk dat bestaat uit een aantal contrapuntvariaties op een basso ostinato.
