- Nigeria gehört zu den am dichtesten besiedelten Ländern in Afrika und hat mit ca. 211 Millionen Einwohnern (2021) die größte Bevölkerung des Kontinents und die siebtgrößte der Welt. Trotz einer relativ hohen Sterblichkeit wächst die Bevölkerung des Landes weiterhin rasant an und könnte bis Mitte des Jahrhunderts bei über 400 Millionen liegen. Nigeria ist die Heimat von über 250 ethnischen Gruppen mit über 500 Sprachen, und die unterschiedlichen Sitten und die Traditionen unter ihnen verleihen dem Land eine große kulturelle Vielfalt. Die drei größten ethnischen Gruppen sind die Hausa und Fulani mit 34 % der Bevölkerung (werden meist als eine Gruppe gezählt); zusammen mit den Igbo und den Yoruba mit jeweils ca. 14 %. Dazu existieren noch etliche weitere kleinere ethnische Gruppen. Da jede Ethnie auch über ihre eigene Sprache bzw. Dialekt verfügt, gehört das Land auch linguistisch zu den diversesten weltweit. In den urbanen Zentren des Landes ist eine charakteristische Pidgin-Sprache entstanden. Approximately 50% of Nigerians are urban dwellers, with the rate of urbanization being estimated at 4.3%. Nigeria is home to over 250 ethnic groups, with over 500 languages, and the variety of customs, and traditions among them gives the country great cultural diversity. Most of the population is a young population, with 42.54% between the ages of 0–14. There is also a very high dependency ratio of the country at 88.2 dependants per 100 non-dependants.Three of the main religious groups are Muslim estimated at 45%, Christian at 45% and other indigenous beliefs at 10%. The predominantly Christian Igbo are found in the southeast. Roman Catholicism is the largest Christian denomination in Igboland, but Anglicanism is also strong, as are Pentecostal and other Evangelical denominations. Persons of different ethnic backgrounds most commonly communicate in English, although knowledge of two or more Nigerian languages is widespread.
