- The Democratic Social Party (Portuguese: Partido Democrático Social, PDS) was a conservative Brazilian political party. It was established in 1979 as a continuation of the National Renewal Alliance (ARENA), the political wing of the military during the 1965–79 military dictatorship, at a time in which the country was moving away from authoritarianism. However, the official foundation date is 31 January 1980. In 1985, when Paulo Maluf won the party's nomination for the presidential bid, a huge group, led by José Sarney (former leader of ARENA from 1971 to 1980 and of the PDS from 1980–85), Jorge Bornhausen and Marco Maciel, founded the Liberal Front Party (PFL). Sarney was elected Vice-President in that year's election, but he served from the beginning as President, due to the death of President-elect Tancredo Neves. The Democratic Social Party suffered bad defeats in both the 1986 (7.9%) and 1990 (8.9%) elections for the Chamber of Deputies, when at the same time PFL took 17.7% and 12.4%. In 1986, in particular, the party was seriously defeated also in state elections, so that all of the 12 governorships won in 1982 were lost. In 1993 the party merged with the Christian Democratic Party (3.0% in 1990 elections for the lower house) to form the Reform Progressive Party, which was intended to be a moderate-conservative party. Il a été créé en 1979 dans le prolongement de l'Alliance rénovatrice nationale (ARENA), l'aile politique de l'armée pendant la dictature militaire de 1965-1979, à une époque où le pays s'éloignait de l'autoritarisme. Cependant, la date officielle de fondation est le 31 janvier 1980. En 1985, lorsque Paulo Maluf remporte l'investiture du parti pour la candidature présidentielle, un vaste groupe, dirigé par José Sarney (ancien chef de l'ARENA de 1971 à 1980 et du PDS de 1980 à 1985), Jorge Bornhausen et Marco Maciel, fondent le Parti du Front libéral (PFL). Sarney est élu vice-président lors de l'élection de cette année-là, mais il sert dès le début en tant que président, en raison de la mort du président élu Tancredo Neves . - De Democratisch Sociale Partij (Portugees: Partido Democrático Social, afkorting PDS) is een voormalig Braziliaanse conservatieve politieke partij. De partij werd in 1966 onder de naam ARENA (afkorting van Aliança Removadora Social) opgericht en regeerde uitsluitend tijdens de militaire dictatuur in Brazilië toen een tweepartijenstelsel bestaande uit haarzelf en de MDB van kracht was. Het kwam aan de macht na de militaire coup van 1964 en leverde sindsdien vijf presidenten af. Onder het bewind van de eerste drie bouwde de partij een dictatoriaal regime op, waarna onder het bewind van Ernesto Geisel en vervolgens João Figueiredo langzamerhand tot een politieke liberalisering kwam. Nadat het tweepartijenstelsel door laatstgenoemde in 1980 werd afgeschaft ging ARENA verder onder de naam Partido Democrático Social. Wegens onenigheid binnen de partij omtrent de opvolging van Figueiredo richtte dissidenten de Partij van het Liberale Front op. Nadien dong PDS tevergeefs naar het presidentschap, maar leverde daarentegen in enkele staten gouverneurs op. In 1993 fuseerde de partij met de PDC waarna het is opgegaan in de PP. (nl)

- Partido Democrático Social (PDS) foi um partido político brasileiro de direita fundado em 31 de janeiro de 1980. O partido surgiu após o fim do sistema bipartidário que havia sido implantado pelo Regime Militar de 1964 e que foi objeto de uma reforma ocorrida no governo João Figueiredo. Sucessor da ARENA, foi extinto em 1993, após seus integrantes aprovarem sua fusão com o Partido Democrata Cristão (PDC) para criar o Partido Progressista Reformador (PPR). De uma dissensão nos seus quadros, surgiu o Partido da Frente Liberal (PFL), mais recentemente Democratas (DEM) e hoje parte do União Brasil, em 1985. Posteriormente o Partido Progressista Reformador mudaria para Partido Progressista Brasileiro (PPB) em 1995, e, numa nova mudança, tornou-se o Partido Progressista (PP) em 2003, passando a denominação atual de Progressistas em 2017. Como herdeiro da ARENA, comandou as duas casas do Congresso Nacional durante o Governo Figueiredo (1979-1985). Elegeu governadores em treze estados brasileiros ao longo de sua existência, sendo doze nas eleições de 1982 e um nas de 1990. (pt)
