- Der Cross Bronx Expressway (deutsch wörtlich Bronx-Quer-Schnellstraße) ist die Bezeichnung für einen 6,5 Meilen (10,46 km) langen Autobahnabschnitt innerhalb New York Citys, der in West-Ost-Richtung durch die südliche Bronx verläuft. Die Eröffnung erfolgte zwischen 1955 und 1963 in mehreren Abschnitten. Die Autobahn beginnt an der Alexander Hamilton Bridge über den Harlem River, verläuft dann in östlicher Richtung etwa in Höhe der 175th Street bis zum Bronx River und dann in südsüdöstlicher Richtung weiter bis zum Hutchinson River, wo er auf den trifft. Danach verläuft er in südöstlicher Richtung weiter durch Throgs Neck hindurch und trifft am Fuße der Throgs Neck Bridge auf den . Der Cross Bronx Expressway ist eine sehr wichtige Straßenverbindung im Großraum New York. Zwischen dem Harlem River und dem Hutchinson River ist er Teil der Interstate 95, der wichtigsten Nord-Süd-Straßenverbindung an der Ostküste; gleichzeitig ist er Teil der Autobahnverbindung von Queens und Long Island nach New Jersey unter Umgehung Manhattans. Die Verkehrsbelastung ist entsprechend sehr hoch. Der Bau und insbesondere die Streckenführung der Autobahn gilt seit jeher als umstritten. Kritikern zufolge sei bei der Planung kaum Rücksicht auf die sozialen Strukturen der betroffenen Wohngebiete genommen worden. Die Autobahn verläuft an vielen Stellen in der Tat nicht zwischen den einzelnen gewachsenen Stadtvierteln, sondern mitten durch sie hindurch und nicht unter Ausrichtung auf das vorhandene Straßennetz. Da sich der Niedergang der südlichen Bronx insbesondere nach Fertigstellung der Schnellstraße spürbar beschleunigte, wird ihre Existenz für dieses Phänomen mitverantwortlich gemacht. (de)
- The Cross Bronx Expressway is a major freeway in the New York City borough of the Bronx. It is mainly designated as part of Interstate 95 (I-95), but also includes portions of I-295 and U.S. Route 1 (US 1). The Cross Bronx begins at the Alexander Hamilton Bridge over the Harlem River, where the Trans-Manhattan Expressway continues west across Upper Manhattan to the George Washington Bridge. While I-95 leaves at the Bruckner Interchange in Throgs Neck, following the Bruckner Expressway and New England Thruway to Connecticut, the Cross Bronx Expressway continues east, carrying I-295 to the merge with the Throgs Neck Expressway near the Throgs Neck Bridge. Though the road goes primarily northwest-to-southeast, the nominal directions of all route numbers west of the Bruckner Interchange are aligned with the northbound route number going southeast, and the southbound route number going northwest. The Cross Bronx Expressway was conceived by Robert Moses and built between 1948 and 1972. It was the first highway built through a crowded urban environment in the United States; the most expensive mile of road ever built to that point is part of the Cross Bronx, costing $40 million (equivalent to $404,621,118 in 2021). At one point during construction, Moses' crews had to support the Grand Concourse (a major surface thoroughfare), a subway line and several elevated train lines while the expressway was laboriously pushed through. The highway experiences severe traffic problems, and its construction has been blamed for negatively affecting a number of low-income neighborhoods in the South Bronx. (en)
