- City of the Living Dead (Italian: Paura nella città dei morti viventi, lit. 'Fear in the city of the living dead', also released as The Gates of Hell) is a 1980 Italian supernatural horror film co-written and directed by Lucio Fulci. It stars Christopher George, Catriona MacColl, Carlo de Mejo, Antonella Interlenghi, Giovanni Lombardo Radice, and Janet Agren. The film follows a priest whose hanging opens a gateway to hell that releases the undead, where a psychic and a reporter team up to close it before All Saints' Day. City of the Living Dead was developed after the financial success of Fulci's previous film, Zombi 2, leading him to work with screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti to write a new horror film inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. The film was greenlit during production of Contraband, which Fulci left to begin working on City of the Living Dead. Principal photography was shot predominantly on location in the United States, with interiors shot in Rome. The film was theatrically released in Italy in August 1980, which grossed ₤985 million. It was followed by a release throughout Europe, including a screening at th at the Paris International Festival of Fantastic and Science-Fiction Film, where Fulci won the Audience Award, and in the United States in April 1983. Upon release, the film received criticism for its performances, plot, and graphic violence, but like many of Fulci's films, has developed a cult following. (en)

Il s'agit du premier volet de la trilogie de la mort, complétée l'année suivante par L'Au-delà et La Maison près du cimetière. Frayeurs a été développé après le succès financier du film précédent de Fulci, L'Enfer des zombies, ce qui l'a amené à travailler avec le scénariste Dardano Sacchetti pour écrire un nouveau film d'épouvante inspiré des œuvres de H. P. Lovecraft. Le film a été lancé pendant la production de son poliziottesco La Guerre des gangs, que Fulci a quitté pour commencer à travailler sur Frayeurs. È la prima parte della cosiddetta "Trilogia della morte", tre film diretti da Fulci tra il 1980 e il 1981, interpretati da Catriona MacColl. Gli altri film della trilogia sono ...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà e Quella villa accanto al cimitero. È tra i film italiani preferiti dal regista Quentin Tarantino. Con questo film Lucio Fulci codificò definitivamente il suo stile nell'horror, fatto di violenza esasperata, scene splatter ed elementi onirici vicini al surreale. Il film si doveva intitolare semplicemente La paura, ma la produzione intendeva sfruttare il grande successo di Zombi 2, diretto da Fulci nel 1979, e aggiunse la seconda parte del titolo per rievocare i morti viventi e tentare una sorta di sequel apocrifo del precedente film. In Germania il film fu messo al bando, per le sue immagini considerate troppo violente, e l'unica versione censurata fu a sua volta sequestrata. Solo una versione, ulteriormente censurata, riuscì a ottenere il visto.. (it)
