- Chajul (Spanish pronunciation: [tʃaˈxul]; full name San Gaspar Chajul) is a town and municipality in the Guatemalan department of El Quiché. Chajul is part of the Ixil Community, along with San Juan Cotzal and Santa Maria Nebaj. The Ixil region is isolated by beautiful mountains and has maintained its rich Ixil Maya traditions and language. Chajul, Nebaj, and Cotzal make up the Ixil Region in the Department of Quiché in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Having been at the heart of the 36-year civil war, Chajul experiences post-war challenges such as emotional trauma, land displacement, and fragmented families. Additionally, unemployment is high, large families live in one-room adobe houses with open cooking fires, opportunities for women are scarce, and family- and gender-based violence are common. The community has a corn-based agricultural economy in which adults struggle daily to feed their families and the average income is $1–3 per day. A 2002 study revealed that less than 1% of children graduate from high school (5% from middle school) as they are forced to leave school at a young age to help support the family household, leaving 75% of the adult population illiterate. Chajul further suffers from common preventable health concerns, such as respiratory illness, intestinal disease, tuberculosis, malnutrition, and death during childbirth. Eighty percent of the Chajul population lives in poverty. (en)
- Chajul —o San Gaspar Chajul— es un del departamento de en el occidente de la República de Guatemala. De acuerdo al censo de población de 2018 tenía una población de 52,019 habitantes, y una extensión territorial de 598 km². El municipio de Chajul tiene una cabecera municipal con el mismo nombre, así como sesenta comunidades rurales, siendo las más grandes Ilom, Finca la Perla (Xemac), Sotzíl, Xolcuay, San Joaquín Chel, San José Xix. Cuando los españoles e indígenas tlaxcaltecas y cholultecas invadieron Guatemala en la década de 1520, Chajul y otros poblados indígenas ixiles y uspantekos gracias a su ubicación en la sierra de los Cuchumatanes y a la ferocidad de sus guerreros; tras varios años de derrotar los intentos de conquista española, finalmente fueron derrotados en diciembre de 1530, y los guerreros sobrevivientes fueron marcados como esclavos en castigo a su prolongada resistencia. Durante la fue una doctrina de los frailes dominicos y luego de la Independencia de Centroamérica, luego de la Reforma Liberal de 1871, el 12 de agosto de 1872 el gobierno de facto del presidente provisorio creó el departamento de Quiché, al que Chajul ha pertenecido desde entonces. Desde 1970 forma parte de la y a principios de la década de 1980 fue escenario de cruentos combates entre el Ejército de Guatemala y el Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres durante la Guerra Civil de Guatemala.
