C'est un régiment de gardes qui est, avec les Governor General's Foot Guards, responsable de la Garde de cérémonie à Rideau Hall et sur la Colline du Parlement à Ottawa en Ontario. En plus de ce rôle cérémoniel, ses soldats s'entraînent à temps partiel afin de servir dans des opérations des Forces armées canadiennes. Celui-ci fut converti en une unité blindée et devint le 22nd Armoured Regiment (The Canadian Grenadier Guards), RCAC, CASF, littéralement le « 22e Régiment blindé (Les Gardes grenadiers canadiens), CBRC, FSAC ». En 1945, les CGG mobilisèrent une seconde unité pour la Force active, le 22nd Canadian Tank Battalion (The Canadian Grenadiers Guards), RCAC, CASF, littéralement le « 22e Bataillon de chars canadien (Les Gardes grenadiers canadiens), CBRC, FSAC », qui était destinée à servir dans le théâtre du Pacifique, mais qui ne s'y rendit pas avant la fin du conflit.
