The Armstrong Whitworth A.W.38 Whitley was one of three British twin-engine, front line medium bomber types in service with the Royal Air Force at the outbreak of the Second World War. It took part in the first RAF bombing raid on German territory, and remained an integral part of the early British bomber offensive until the introduction of four-engine "heavies". Its front line service included performing maritime reconnaissance duties with Coastal Command, while also being employed in the second line roles of glider-tug, trainer and transport aircraft.

Era un velivolo dalla linea straordinariamente austera e con un assetto del muso unico, in quanto quest'ultimo appariva inclinato verso il basso durante il volo orizzontale. All'inizio della guerra era già piuttosto superato e nonostante alcuni miglioramenti, tra cui una postazione caudale con 4 mitragliatrici, venne via via trasferito dalle missioni di bombardamento a quelle di trasporto, specie paracadutisti. Furono i Whitley ad eseguire molte azioni di bombardamento nelle prime fasi della guerra, come quella su Torino del giugno 1940, eseguito da 36 velivoli (anche se non tutti giunsero sull'obiettivo) in quella che fu comunque una notevole operazione di bombardamento in massa degli inizi del conflitto.
