The browser has web browsing capabilities, voice chat, and basic instant messaging. This integrated software can allow users to connect, explore, and gain a more in depth understanding of 3D. Corporate and educational clients of Active Worlds can make use of the interaction, communication, and media to provide functional environments suited for their objective. On May 30, 2006, version 4.1 was released to the general public. The program's original goal was to be the 3D-equivalent of a 2D web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox). Instead of creating a website, the user could construct an office, building, or area in which to display products or information. The necessity for 3D art within Active Worlds to enrich one's world has led to the development of a market place for 3D models, textures, avatars (and associated animation sequences), and more. I clienti di Active Worlds possono usare la comunicazione, l'interazione con il 3D e tutti i mezzi messi a loro disposizione per ottenere ambienti adatti ai loro obiettivi. L'obiettivo originale del programma era di essere l'equivalente tridimensionale dei browser web 2D (come Internet Explorer o Mozilla). Anziché creare un sito web, l'utente può costruire un ufficio, una costruzione o un luogo in cui mostrare prodotti o informazioni. In tegenstelling tot andere 3D programma's draait Active Worlds op een centrale server en is het een 'dynamisch' programma. Anders gezegd: je kunt samen met anderen lopen en bouwen in de virtuele werelden. Mede daardoor verandert de inhoud van de werelden continu. Active Worlds is een product van een Amerikaans bedrijf, Activeworlds Inc. Ze hebben zich als doel gesteld om naast de 2D browsers, zoals Internet Explorer en Firefox, een 3D browser te maken. Hierin kun je dan dus ook je eigen 3D website maken. Op dit moment is Active Worlds alleen beschikbaar om op Microsoft Windows te draaien. Voor gebruik met Macintosh of Linux heb je een Windows emulator nodig. Daarnaast heb je een internet verbinding nodig en een redelijke grafische kaart. Active Worlds is opgezet rond een centrale server, waar een zogenaamd universum op draait. Je kunt een client versie downloaden waarmee je verbinding maakt met die centrale server.
