It serves as a companion to Queen's previous album, A Night at the Opera, with both taking their names from Marx Brothers films and having similar packaging and eclectic musical themes. The album reached the top of the charts in the UK, Japan, and the Netherlands. It reached number five on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart and was Queen's third album to ship gold in the US, subsequently reaching platinum status in the country. - A Day at the Races is een album uit 1976 van de Britse rockgroep Queen. Het is de vijfde elpee van de band en is de opvolger van de succesplaat A Night at the Opera. Net als het voorgaande album was de naam afgeleid van een film van de Marx Brothers. Het album telt tien nummers, waarvan vier van de hand van Freddie Mercury, eenzelfde aantal van Brian May en ook Roger Taylor en John Deacon hebben ieder een nummer geschreven. Het album begint met "Tie Your Mother Down" en een intro door May. Dit nummer is nog steeds geliefd bij de concerten. Het bekendste nummer is de hit "Somebody to Love". Dit nummer werd later ook een hit in een samenwerking met George Michael. Verder verscheen ook "Good Old Fashioned Loverboy" als single, wat Queen onder meer bij Top of the Pops speelde. Het afsluitende nummer is deels in het Japans, een land waar Queen in de jaren 70 zeer geliefd was. Van dit album verscheen in 2011 de heruitgave 2011 Digital Remaster. (nl)

Albumet spelades in mellan juli och november 1976 i tre olika inspelningsstudior: The Manor, Wessex och Sarm Studios i England (att jämföra med föregångaren A Night at the Opera som spelades in i sju olika studior). Detta är det första album gruppen producerade helt på egen hand. De fyra första albumen hade gruppen producerat tillsammans med Roy Thomas Baker. A Day at the Races blev Queens andra raka album att nå den brittiska albumlistans förstaplats. I USA nådde albumet plats 5 på Billboard 200. Första singeln från albumet var Freddie Mercurys "Somebody to Love", som på den brittiska singellistan nådde plats två. Därefter släpptes Brian Mays "Tie Your Mother Down" som nådde plats 31. 20 maj 1977 släpptes Queen's First EP med "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy" som huvudspår och nådde plats 17 i Storbritannien. I Japan släpptes även "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)", och i USA gav man ut "Long Away". Albumet är, precis som föregående album A Night at the Opera, namngivet efter en av Bröderna Marx filmer, En dag på kapplöpningarna.
