- The 20th hijacker is a possible additional terrorist in the September 11 attacks of 2001 who, for unknown reasons, was unable to participate. The 20th hijacker, though not present during the actual attacks, is said to have been deeply involved in the preparations. There were many variations of the 9/11 plot, with the number of terrorists fluctuating with available resources and changing circumstances. In the end, there were 19 hijackers: three of the planes were taken over by five members each and the fourth was hijacked by four people. The latter plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, due to the resistance from passengers before it could reach its target in Washington, D.C.. (en)

En effet, alors que les détournements des vols 11, 175 et 77 ont été réalisés par des équipes de cinq hommes, le vol United Airlines 93 l'a été par seulement quatre hommes, ce qui laisse supposer qu'un homme n'a pas participé directement aux attentats pour une raison inconnue mais qu'il les aurait planifiés. Différents suspects ont été cités, notamment à cause de leur profil (leçons de pilotage) ou proximité avec les terroristes impliqués : Ramzi Bin al-Shibh, Mohammed al-Kahtani, Zacarias Moussaoui, (en), (en), (en), Walid ben Attash ou encore (en). - Il termine "ventesimo dirottatore" è stato spesso utilizzato dai mass media occidentali per indicare un potenziale candidato a entrare nel gruppo dei dirottatori che hanno preso parte agli attentati dell'11 settembre 2001, ma che non è stato poi in grado di prendervi parte. Sebbene la locuzione possa apparire come una semplificazione giornalistica, le indagini condotte hanno dimostrato che sono esistiti dei margini - sebbene poi rivelatisi impraticabili per al-Qāʿida - per la presenza di almeno un ulteriore terrorista. Il progetto originario dell'attentato prevedeva l'impiego di 25 o 26 dirottatori, suddivisi in gruppi di 4-6 per aereo. In seguito a problemi di varia natura però, l'organico dell'operazione scese infine a 19 dirottatori.
