A Labour Party leadership election was triggered by a general election which resulted in a hung parliament; the first since 1974. The previous Labour leader, Gordon Brown, resigned as Leader of the Labour Party on 10 May and as Prime Minister on 11 May, following the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats forming a coalition government.The National Executive Committee decided the timetable for the election the result of which would be announced at the annual party conference. Gordon Brown quitte le 10 Downing Street et Harriet Harman le remplace par intérim à la tête du parti. Pour participer au scrutin il faut le soutien de 12,5 % des députés travaillistes soit 33 parlementaires (les travaillistes ont 258 députés mais Eric Illsley a été suspendu, il n'y a donc 257 soutiens possibles). Il y a cinq candidats : Ed Miliband, David Miliband, Ed Balls, Andy Burnham et Diane Abbott. John McDonnell s'est retiré faute de soutiens suffisants pour pouvoir se présenter. (fr)
