- The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion. The 1962 competitions for men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dance took place from March 14 to 17 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The Figure Skating World Championships in Prague were originally planned for 1961, but were cancelled due to the crash of Sabena Flight 548, which killed everyone on board the plane, including the entire US figure skating team. East Germany participated in the World Figure Skating Championships for the first time. This competition is best remembered for Donald Jackson's come-from-behind victory in the men's event with a tour-de-force free skating that included the first triple lutz jump ever landed in competition as well as a triple salchow jump and 20 other double and single jumps, including jumps in opposite directions and jumps with variations in arm position or delayed rotation. Jackson received 7 perfect 6.0 scores for this performance. Prague hometown favorites Eva Romanová / Pavel Roman won the dance event - breaking the British domination of this discipline - and Canadians Maria Jelinek / Otto Jelinek were the winners in the pairs. As children, the Jelineks had defected from Czechoslovakia with their parents after the post-war Communist takeover, and there were significant fears for their safety in returning to their home country. The "official" story that had been circulated at the time of the previous year's planned competition was that they were merely of Czech descent. The Jelineks' chief competitors, 1960 runners-up Marika Kilius / Hans-Jürgen Bäumler, were forced to withdraw from the competition after colliding on side-by-side jumps during their program, and the silver medal was won by Ludmila Belousova / Oleg Protopopov. La capitale tchécoslovaque devait organiser initialement les championnats du monde en 1961, mais la catastrophe aérienne du vol 548 Sabena qui tue toute l'équipe américaine qui s'y rendait, oblige l'Union internationale de patinage à annuler les mondiaux. - De Wereldkampioenschappen kunstschaatsen 1962 werden gevormd door vier toernooien die door de Internationale Schaatsunie werden georganiseerd. Voor de mannen was het de 52e editie, voor de vrouwen de 42e, voor de paren de 40e en voor de ijsdansers de tiende editie. De kampioenschappen vonden plaats in Praag, Tsjechoslowakije. Praag was voor de tweede keer gaststad, in 1939 vond het toernooi voor de vrouwen hier plaats. Tsjechoslowakije was voor de tweede keer het gastland. Het waren de eerste kampioenschappen na de afgelasting in 1961 vanwege de Sabena vlucht 548 vliegtuigramp op 15 februari 1961 op Zaventem waarbij alle passagiers, waaronder de voltallige Amerikaanse delegatie voor het WK kunstschaatsen op weg naar Praag, om het leven kwamen. - Чемпионат мира по фигурному катанию 1962 года был проведён Международным союзом конькобежцев с 14 по 17 марта в Праге (Чехословакия). Соревнования проводились в категориях женское одиночное катание, мужское одиночное катание и парное катание и в танцах на льду. В соревнованиях приняло участие рекордное количество фигуристов — 119. Чемпионкой мира среди женщин стала представитель Нидерландов Шаукье Дейкстра, среди мужчин победил представитель Канады Дональд Джексон, среди пар победу одержали представители Канады Мария Джелинек и Отто Джелинек, представители Чехословакии Ева Романова и Павел Роман в танцах. Чемпионат мира в Праге 1961 года первоначально планировался на 1961 год, но был отменён из-за авиакатастрофы, произошедшей 15 февраля, в которой погибла сборная США по фигурному катанию, летевшая этим рейсом. Впервые на чемпионате выступали фигуристы ГДР. Также впервые фигуристы СССР (Людмила Белоусова и Олег Протопопов) завоевали медали чемпионата мира. (ru)

A competição foi disputada entre os dias 14 de março e 17 de março, na cidade de Praga, Tchecoslováquia. Originalmente a cidade de Praga iria sediar a edição de 1961, que acabou sendo cancelada após o acidente com o voo Sabena 548, que caiu nos arredores da cidade de Bruxelas, Bélgica, próximo ao aeroporto de Bruxelas, que vitimou os membros da equipe dos Estados Unidos de patinação artística.
