- The free election of 1573 was the first ever royal election to be held in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. It gathered approximately 40,000 szlachta (Polish nobility) voters (the highest turnout ever) who elected Henry of Valois king. The free election was introduced due to the childless death of the last Jagiellonian monarch Sigismund II Augustus and the lack of a potential candidate that would satisfy most of the nobles. Even though that kind of half-democratic election soon proved to be weakening the power of both the king and the state, it was not abolished until the Constitution of May 3, 1791 was established. Henry I of Poland ruled only for a single year after which he returned to his native France, as he had become the new French king after the death of his brother. The next election took place in 1576. - La elección libre de 1573 fue la primera elección que se celebró en la Mancomunidad Polaco-Lituana para elegir a un nuevo monarca. Reunió a unos 40 000 votantes de la szlachta (la nobleza polaco-lituana), la mayor participación de la historia. Eligieron a Enrique de Valois, gobernando como Enrique I de Polonia sólo un año, tras el cual regresó a su Francia natal, ya que se había convertido en el nuevo rey francés tras la muerte de su hermano. La libre elección se introdujo debido a la muerte sin hijos del último monarca jagellón Segismundo II Augusto y a la falta de un posible candidato que satisficiera a la mayoría de los nobles. A pesar de que ese tipo de elección semi-democrática pronto demostró que debilitaba el poder tanto del rey como del Estado, no se abolió hasta que se estableció la Constitución del 3 de mayo de 1791.La siguiente elección fue la elección libre de 1576. Elle réunit environ 40 000 membres de la noblesse polonaise (Szlachta) qui constituent l'électorat. Le 11 mai 1573, les nobles élisent le prince français Henri de Valois, frère du roi de France Charles IX, comme roi de Pologne et grand-duc de Lituanie. Sejm elekcyjny, na którym dokonano wyboru Henryka Walezego na króla Polski i wielkiego księcia Litwy, rozpoczął się 5 kwietnia 1573 roku i trwał do 20 maja tego roku. W okresie od śmierci ostatniego Jagiellona do elekcji Walezjusza wypracowano sposób wyboru nowego monarchy Rzeczypospolitej, a zmiany ustrojowe zapoczątkowane podczas tego bezkrólewia przetrwały do reform przeprowadzonych w czasach Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego.
