- The 155 mm gun M1 was a 155 millimeter caliber field gun developed and used by the United States military. Nicknamed "Long Tom" (an appellation with a long and storied history in U.S. field and naval artillery), it was produced in M1 and M2 variants, later known as the M59. Developed to replace the Canon de 155mm GPF, the gun was deployed as a heavy field weapon during World War II and the Korean War, and also classed as secondary armament for seacoast defense. The gun could fire a 100 lb (45 kg) shell to a maximum range of 14 mi (23 km), with an estimated accuracy life of 1,500 rounds. The Long Tom was also adopted by a number of other nations, including the United Kingdom, Austria, Israel, and the Netherlands. (en)

- Il cannone M1 155 mm Long Tom (155/45 nella denominazione italiana) fu utilizzato nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale dall'US Army. Trae origine da un pezzo francese dello stesso calibro, il 155 mm GPF, fornito agli Stati Uniti nel corso della prima guerra mondiale. Dopo la fine della guerra, il pezzo francese fu studiato approfonditamente, modificando soprattutto l'otturatore. Verso la fine degli anni trenta, il nuovo cannone fu omologato come M1 155 mm e ne fu iniziata la produzione. L'affusto era a code divaricabili su due carrelli, uno (anteriore) su cui appoggiavano le code nella marcia con due ruote, l'altro (dalla parte della bocca da fuoco) era su quattro ruote binate. Mentre il carrello anteriore in batteria era tolto e spostato per poter divaricare le code, il carrello posteriore era sollevato, in modo da fornire un contrappeso ed abbassare il baricentro della bocca da fuoco all'atto dello sparo. Alcuni miglioramenti di dettaglio portarono alla versione M1A1 e, poco prima della fine della Seconda guerra mondiale, alla versione M2. Dopo la fine della guerra fu riclassificato come M59. Gli alleati ebbero quantità limitate di questo cannone, in particolare la Gran Bretagna. Questo cannone (soprannominato "Long Tom") fu anche utilizzato come semovente su uno scafo derivato da quello dell'M4 Sherman, con la denominazione di M40, tuttavia in questo modo fu impiegato solo nelle fasi finali della guerra (marzo 1945) e successivamente nella Guerra di Corea.
