Villard-de-Lans (French pronunciation: ​[vilaʁ də lɑ̃]; Occitan: Lo Vilar de Lanç) is a commune in the Isère department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France. The town is also situated in the Vercors Massif. It was the administrative centre of the eponymous canton until the departmental elections of 2015. After the elections, Villard-de-Lans and the communes of its former canton were all incorporated into the new canton of Fontaine-Vercors. The town remains the seat of the Community of Communes in the Vercors Massif (CCMV).

C'est la zone du massif la plus développée économiquement et démographiquement, bien desservie par un réseau routier qui la relie à la vallée de l'Isère et aux grandes métropoles de la région, Grenoble, dont l'agglomération est très proche, et Valence qui la relie à la Vallée du Rhône. Villard-de-Lans fut, historiquement, depuis le Consulat, le chef-lieu de son canton jusqu'aux élections départementales de 2015, car à compter de ce scrutin, Villard-de-Lans et les communes de son ancien canton ont toutes été incorporées dans le nouveau canton de Fontaine-Vercors. Toutefois, la ville reste le siège de la communauté de communes du massif du Vercors (CCMV). Villard-de-Lans est aussi la commune qui offre le plus grand nombre de lits du secteur hôtelier du parc naturel régional du Vercors et malgré sa séparation avec la commune de Corrençon-en-Vercors, survenue en 1857, elle reste cependant la commune ayant le territoire le plus étendu de la CCMV, avec une superficie légèrement supérieure à 67 km2 ; un territoire qui, par ses dimensions, présente aussi un potentiel forestier, montagnard (notamment en zone skiable), spéléologique et faunistique notable. Cette commune du Vercors est également la plus peuplée de son territoire avec une population supérieure à 4 000 habitants. Elle a obtenu le niveau « 2 fleurs » au concours des villes et villages fleuris, et son espace skiable dénommé Villard-Corrençon est doté du label « Famille Plus ». L'aire urbaine de Villard-de-Lans ne comprend que la commune, la mairie est située à 1 020 m d'altitude et ses habitants sont dénommés les Villardiens. (fr)
