- Histaspes (antic persa 𐎻𐏁𐎫𐎠𐎿𐎱, Vištāspa, ‘(El) que coneix els cavalls’; grec antic: Ὑστάσπης, Hustáspēs, llatí: Hystaspes) fou fill del rei Arsames dels perses i pare del futur rei Darios I el Gran i d'Artanes. Formava part de la casa reial persa dels Aquemènides, però ell mateix mai va portar el títol reial. Va ser nomenat sàtrapa de Pàrtia potser el 530 aC sota Cambises II i probablement també sota Cir. Va acompanyar Cir en la seva expedició contra els masagetes, però va ser enviat de nou a Persis perquè vigilés al seu fill gran Darios, de qui Cir, a causa d'un somni, sospitava que el podia trair. Jeho životní data lze jen velmi těžko zrekonstruovat, ví se jen, že za vlády Kambýsa II. (530–522 př. n. l.) zastával funkci místodržitele Persidy. Poté, co Dareios I. nastoupil roku 522 př. n. l. na perský trůn (nebo snad už dříve), spravoval Hystaspés Parthii, kde musel potlačovat nebezpečné povstání proti Dareiově vládě. Podle Behistunského nápisu svedl 8. března 521 př. n. l. s povstalci bitvu u města Višpauzátiš a dosáhl skvělého vítězství. Hystaspes nahm am Feldzug von Kyros II. gegen die Massageten teil. Unter Kambyses II. wurde er Satrap der Provinz Parthien, was er auch unter der Herrschaft seines Sohnes blieb. 522/521 v. Chr. unterstützte er den Feldzug seines Sohnes Dareios I. gegen die aufständischen Meder und besiegte 521 v. Chr. die mit den Medern verbündeten Parther und Hyrkanianer. He was the father of Darius I, emperor of the Achaemenid Empire, and Artabanus, who was a trusted advisor to both his brother Darius as well as Darius's son and successor, Xerxes I. The son of Arsames, Hystaspes was a member of the Persian royal house of the Achaemenids. He was satrap of Persis under Cambyses II, and probably under his second cousin Cyrus the Great also. He accompanied Cyrus on his expedition against the Massagetae. However, he was sent back to Persis to keep watch over his eldest son, Darius, whom Cyrus, after a dream, suspected of considering treason. Besides Darius, Hystaspes had three sons: Artabanus, Artaphernes, and Artanes, as well as a daughter who married Darius' lance-bearer Gobryas. Ammianus Marcellinus makes him a chief of the Magians, and tells a story of his studying in India under the Brahmins, an event that would correspond to the Achaemenid conquest of the Indus Valley: "Hystaspes, a very wise monarch, the father of Darius. Who while boldly penetrating into the remoter districts of upper India, came to a certain woody retreat, of which with its tranquil silence the Brahmans, men of sublime genius, were the possessors.
