A 21-gun salute is the most commonly recognized of the customary gun salutes that are performed by the firing of cannons or artillery as a military honor. Tradisi ini berawal dari praktik maritim pada abad ke-17 yang dilakukan ketika kapal perang menembakkan meriamnya ke laut sampai amunisinya habis sebagai bentuk untuk menandakan tidak ada niat berseteru kepada musuh.
