W 2018 roku był współlaureatem Nagrody Turinga. Jest profesorem Wydziału Informatyki i Badań Operacyjnych na Uniwersytecie Montrealskim oraz kierownikiem naukowym Montrealskiego Instytutu Algorytmów Uczenia (ang. Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms, MILA). Bengio otrzymał tytuł bechelora w elektrotechnice, magistra w informatyce oraz doktora w informatyce na Uniwersytecie McGilla. Po uzyskaniu doktoratu Bengio był doktorantem-stażystą (ang. postdoc) w Massachusetts Institute of Technology (pod kierunkiem ) oraz w AT&T Bell Labs.
