- جيش الجمهورية الأعظم هي منظمة أخوية أسسها قدماء المحاربين الاتحاديين في الحرب الأهلية بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وأقاموا معسكرهم الأول في إنديانابوليس (20 نوفمبر 1866). كانت أغراضهم المحافظة على الصداقة وتكريم الزملاء الذين سقطوا صرعى القتال، ومساعدة الأرامل والعاجزين وزيادة المعاشات. كان غالبية الأعضاء من الجمهوريين فزادوا قوة هذا الحزب حتى 1900 أما الطائفة المقاتلة من قدماء المحاربين من التعاهديين فقد أنشئت في 1889 وعسكر جيش الجمهورية الأعظم لآخر مرة ( كانت المرة الثالثة والثمانين ) 28 – 31 أغسطس 1949 في أنديانابولس وكان المعسكر يتكون من ستة أعضاء من الستة عشر عضوا الذين كانوا وقتئذ على قيد الحياة توفي آخر عضو في 1956. Gegründet wurde die GAR am 6. April 1866 in Decatur von . Nachdem das letzte lebende Mitglied, , im Jahr 1956 im Alter von 106 Jahren starb, wurde die Einheit aufgelöst. Aufgrund der Erfahrung der angehörigen Soldaten wurde die Grand Army zur ersten politischen Interessenvertretung, welche Stimmrecht für afroamerikanische Kriegsveteranen einforderte und den US-Kongress dazu bewog, Veteranenpensionen einzurichten. Außerdem unterstützten sie Kandidaten der Republikanischen Partei. Die GAR half bei den Bestrebungen, den 1866 erstmals als Decoration Day ausgerufenen Gedenktag in Memorial Day umzubenennen und als offiziellen Feiertag anzuerkennen, was 1882 geschah. - The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, and grew to include hundreds of "posts" (local community units) across the North and West. It was dissolved in 1956 at the death of its last member. According to Stuart McConnell: The Grand Army of the Republic, the largest of all Union Army veterans' organizations, was the most powerful single-issue political lobby of the late nineteenth century, securing massive pensions for veterans and helping to elect five postwar presidents from its own membership. To its members, it was also a secret fraternal order, a source of local charity, a provider of entertainment in small municipalities, and a patriotic organization. Linking men through their experience of the war, the G.A.R. became among the first organized advocacy groups in American politics, supporting voting rights for black veterans, promoting patriotic education, helping to make Memorial Day a national holiday, lobbying Congress to establish regular veterans' pensions, and supporting Republican political candidates. Its peak membership, at 410,000, was in 1890, a high point of various Civil War commemorative and monument dedication ceremonies. (en)

Fondée en 1866 à Decatur dans l'Illinois et croissant jusqu'à inclure des centaines de postes (unités des communautés locales) à l'échelle de la nation, (surtout dans le Nord, mais aussi quelques-uns dans le Sud et l'Ouest), elle est dissoute en 1956, lorsque son dernier membre, Albert Woolson (1850 – 1956) de Duluth, dans le Minnesota, meurt. Reliant les hommes à travers leur expérience de la guerre, la G. A.
