C'est un chien d'arrêt continental né vers les années 1860 dont le nom est dû à un Néerlandais, Eduard Karel Korthals, qui croisa probablement un braque français, un barbet et un pointer. La première présentation a eu lieu en 1870, le standard a été établi en 1886. Il est devenu français en 1919, appartenant au 7e groupe des races de chien de la F.C.I. Son standard le décrit comme un chien vigoureux, rustique, de taille moyenne (de 55 à 60 cm au garrot pour les mâles, de 50 à 55 cm chez les femelles). Il est couvert d’un poil rude et grossier de couleur gris acier (marron mélangé dans le blanc) avec taches marron, uniformément marron, marron et blanc ou fauve et blanc, ou blanc et noir). Sa tête, très expressive, porte barbe, moustache et sourcils bien accusés. Le Korthals est un chien au caractère doux et enjoué qui est aussi à l’aise dans les sous-bois touffus, les grands espaces ou les marais, où il excelle, qu’à la maison où il se révèle le meilleur des compagnons pour toute la famille. - The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (also called the Korthals Griffon and the Griffon d'arrêt à poil dur Korthals in France and Quebec) is a breed of dog used in hunting as a gundog. It is sometimes considered to be Dutch in ancestry, due to the nationality of the breed founder, Eduard Karel Korthals. History records the progression of the development of the breed through Biebesheim am Rhein, Germany where the founder established the Ipenwoud kennel and the breed type was established and then into France where it is now recognized. Others consider the Griffon to be a German breed because Korthals' kennel, Ipenwoud, was located in Biebesheim am Rhein, Germany. It was there for over twenty years that Korthals dedicated his life to the development and perfection of the Korthals Griffon. The breed is still relatively rare in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom despite long recognition by their respective national kennel clubs, as well as the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale). The Korthals Griffon is particularly adapted for hunting in thick undergrowth and around water, where its harsh coat is excellent protection. The griffon is used primarily as a hunting dog for upland game birds as well as waterfowl. (en)

Korthals syfte var att få fram en stående fågelhund som även klarade all slags apportarbete samt eftersök. För ändamålet använde han fågelhundar av typerna vorsteh och griffon, bland andra griffon à poil laineux (griffon Boulet), samt tillförde inslag av vattenhunden barbet (pudel).
