- Griffon is a type of dog, a collection of breeds that were originally hunting dogs. There are three lines of the griffon type recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI): the Griffon Vendéens, the wirehaired pointers, and the smousje (Belgian companion dogs or Dutch Smoushond). The griffon type is characterized by rough- or wire-hair. The griffon is mentioned as early as Xenophon. The hounds, Canis Segusius, used by the Gauls were griffons. Among the oldest breeds are the Italian Wirehaired Pointing Dog or Spinone Italiano (FCI #165) and the breeds bred by originating in the Low Countries (Belgium, Netherlands, northern France) which have a short, bearded muzzle. The smousje, a small dog mentioned since the Middle Ages in the Low Countries known for its firm, even temperament and rough coat, was the initial breeding stock for the Brussels Griffon. (en)

Attualmente selezionati in Francia e Paesi Bassi come (razze canine, gruppo 7) e (razze canine, gruppo 6), hanno avuto origine nell'Antichità. Dai Griffoni sono stati selezionati anche cani da caccia di piccole dimensioni ora utilizzati come cani da compagnia dalla FCI. (it)

Gryfony to psy o bardzo obfitym i szorstkim włosie, sprawdzają się w pracy w wodzie i są pewne w chodzeniu po tropie.Wielkość psów tego typu waha się w granicach 50 – 60 cm w kłębie. Umaszczenie jakie jest spotykane to niebieskoszare, szare w brązowe łaty, dereszowate, brązowe i biało-brązowe. Bardzo rzadko spotykane. Według klasyfikacji FCI do wyżłów w typie gryfona należą:

- Griffon är en beteckning på franska som ges åt hundraser med sträv- eller stickelhårig (raggig) päls. Det är alltså ingen beteckning som anger släktskap eller någon särskild rastyp. Främst är det fråga om franska braquehundar, både drivande hundar och stående fågelhundar. I översättning ges beteckningen på franska även åt liknande raser från andra länder. I Belgien används beteckningen om strävhåriga dvärghundar, som då närmast har pinscher-släktskap. Tidigare delade den internationella kennelfederationen Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in de kontinentala stående fågelhundar i braquetyp och spanieltyp. Nu har man infört griffon som en tredje typ, dit hänförs fyra av de strävhåriga braquehundarna av olika ursprung. (sv)
