- L'estret de Wilkins (oficialment, en anglès, Wilkins Sound) és un estret de l'Antàrtida que està ocupat en gran part per la plataforma de gel Wilkins; està situat entre la concava línia de costa occidental de l' i les costes de l'illa Charcot i l' situades més cap a l'oest. La seva part nord va ser descoberta i cartografiada aproximadament el 1910 per una expedició antàrtica francesa sota el comandament de Jean-Baptiste Charcot i es va sobrevolar el 1929 per . La configuració de l'estret fou determinada el 1940 mitjançant vols exploratoris del (USAS). Fou anomenat així per l'USAS en honor d'Hubert Wilkins, que el 1929 fou el primer a demostrar que "la terra de Charcot" era en realitat una illa i era per tant, indirectament, el descobridor de l'existència de l'estret. L'existència de l'illa Latady en el costat sud-oest de l'estret fou determinada el 1960 per D.J.H. - Der Wilkins-Sund ist eine größtenteils vom Wilkins-Schelfeis besetzte Meerenge in der antarktischen Bellingshausen-See. Sie liegt zwischen der westlichen Küstenlinie der Alexander-I.-Insel und der vorgelagerten Charcot- und der Latady-Insel. Der nördliche Teil des Sunds wurde 1910 von Teilnehmern der Fünften Französischen Antarktisexpedition (1908–1910) unter der Leitung des Polarforschers Jean-Baptiste Charcot erstmals gesichtet und grob kartiert. Der australische Polarforscher Hubert Wilkins, Namensgeber des Sunds, überflog ihn im Jahr 1929. Wissenschaftler der United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) ermittelten 1940 seine Ausdehnung und nahmen die Benennung vor. Wilkins-bankizo ricevis publikan atenton en marto 2008, kiam granda parto de la glacio forrompiĝis Kiel kaŭzon sciencistoj supozas la fandiĝon de la glacio pro la tutmonda varmiĝo, kiu aparte trafas la regionon de Antarkto. - Le détroit de Wilkins (anglais : Wilkins Sound) est un détroit du sud-ouest de la péninsule Antarctique, en Antarctique. Plus précisément, il se trouve à l'ouest de l'île Alexandre-Ier. Il est occupé largement par la barrière de Wilkins. Sa partie nord fut cartographiée en 1910 durant la seconde expédition Charcot dirigées par Jean-Baptiste Charcot. Elle fut observée de manière aérienne en 1929 par Hubert Wilkins. Le 5 avril 2009, le mince pont de glace naturel reliant la barrière de Wilkins au continent s'est scindé, ce qui pourrait entraîner, selon des scientifiques, à un effondrement de la barrière. On rapporte également que la barrière se désintègre en centaines de petits morceaux de glace. Selon David Vaughan du British Antarctic Survey, ceci serait dû au réchauffement climatique. (fr)
- Wilkins Sound is a seaway in Antarctica that is largely occupied by the Wilkins Ice Shelf. It is located on the southwest side of the Antarctic Peninsula between the concave western coastline of Alexander Island and the shores of Charcot Island and Latady Island farther to the west. Its northern portion was first seen and roughly mapped in 1910 by the French Antarctic Expedition under Jean-Baptiste Charcot and was observed from the air in 1929 by Sir Hubert Wilkins. The configuration of the sound was determined in 1940 on exploratory flights by the US Antarctic Service (USAS). It was named by the USAS for Sir Hubert Wilkins, who in 1929 first proved "Charcot Land" to be an island (see Charcot Island) and thereby indirectly discovered this feature. The existence of Latady Island at the southwest side of the sound was determined in 1960 by D.J.H. Searle of Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) by examination of air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48. On 5 April 2009 the thin bridge of ice to the Wilkins Ice Shelf off the coast of Antarctica splintered, and scientists expect it could cause the collapse of the Shelf. There are reports the shelf has exploded into hundreds of small icebergs. David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey has attributed these events to global warming. (en)
