- Das United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) ist ein auf Beobachtungen im Infrarot spezialisiertes astronomisches Teleskop mit 3,8 m Hauptspiegeldurchmesser am Mauna-Kea-Observatorium auf Hawaii. UKIRT war bis 2014 Eigentum des britischen Science and Technology Facilities Council und wurde vom Joint Astronomy Center in Hilo, Hawaii aus betrieben. Es wurde in den 1970ern als relativ kostengünstiges Teleskop für Beobachtungen im Infrarotbereich zwischen 1 und 30 Mikrometer Wellenlänge entworfen und ging 1979 in Betrieb. Die damals verfügbare Detektortechnologie im Infrarot stellte geringere Anforderungen an die Abbildungsqualität als bei optischen Teleskopen, so dass zum Beispiel der Hauptspiegel dünn und leicht ausgelegt werden konnte. Seither wurde es durch verschiedene Ertüchtigungsmaßnahmen den heutigen Anforderungen angepasst und liefert typisch eine Bildqualität unter einer Bogensekunde im nahen Infrarot. UKIRT ist immer noch das weltgrößte vollständig auf Infrarotbeobachtungen spezialisierte Teleskop, auch wenn es in vielen Leistungsmerkmalen inzwischen von optisch-infraroten Teleskopen der 8-Meter-Klasse wie dem Very Large Telescope übertroffen wird. - Le télescope infrarouge du Royaume-Uni (United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope, ou UKIRT) est un télescope infrarouge de 3,8 mètres de diamètre situé au sommet du Mauna Kea à Hawaï et faisant partie des observatoires du Mauna Kea. Il est le deuxième plus grand télescope infrarouge (observant des longueurs d'onde variant de 1 à 30 micromètres) du monde. Il était géré jusqu'en 2014 par le (en) à Hilo. Le télescope appartenait au Science and Technology Facilities Council du Royaume-Uni avant son transfert fin 2014 à l'université de Hawaï. Comme d'autres télescopes semblables situé à Tenerife, l'UKIRT est un télescope de type Cassegrain avec un miroir primaire mince (environ 1/3 de l'épaisseur des autres télescopes semblables) d'une masse de 6,5 tonnes. Le miroir est situé dans une « coquille » d'acier massif d'une masse de 20 tonnes connectée au supports par un (en). Le télescope est monté sur une monture équatoriale qui permet d'observer des objets situés entre +60 et -40 degrés de déclinaison.
