- The Twenty-first, Twenty-second, and Twenty-third Dynasties ruled Egypt from the 10th century through the 8th century BC. The family tree of the Twenty-first dynasty was heavily interconnected with the family of the High Priests of Amun at Thebes. - En succédant à Ramsès XI, Nesbanebdjed Ier (Smendès Ier), qui régnait déjà sur la Basse-Égypte depuis plusieurs années, à Pi-Ramsès, est le fondateur et premier pharaon de cette XXIe dynastie, dite tanite (du nom de sa capitale). Son couronnement marque la fin de l'« ère de la Renaissance » qu'avait décrété le grand prêtre d'Amon Hérihor en l'an 19 de Ramsès XI. Depuis Tanis qui devient la capitale, les pharaons de la dynastie vont exercer un pouvoir qui ne dépassera pas la Basse-Égypte. Ils devront composer avec les pontifes thébains : les « Premiers Prophètes d'Amon », véritables rois, grands prêtres d'Amon qui résident eux à Thèbes, et avec lesquelles ils entretiennent des liens étroits et familiaux.
