Su trama central se desarrolla en torno al deforme Quasimodo, a quien su tutor Frollo mantiene apartado del mundo en lo alto del campanario de la catedral de París. Un día, durante una escapada en secreto por las calles de la ciudad, Quasimodo conoce a una gitana de nombre Esmeralda y ya nada volverá a ser como antes. El espectáculo debutó en 1999 en el Musical Theater de Berlín (actual Theater am Potsdamer Platz), siendo el primer título de Disney Theatrical en estrenarse mundialmente fuera de Estados Unidos y en un idioma diferente al inglés. La version anglophone de la comédie musicale, avec un livret révisé, a fait ses débuts à La Jolla Playhouse à San Diego, en Californie, le 28 octobre 2014 et a poursuivi jusqu'au 7 décembre 2014. Par la suite, le spectacle ouvert au Paper Mill Playhouse à Millburn, New Jersey le 4 mars 2015. Encore une fois avec un livret révisé, qui est la 3e et dernière édition. Le spectacle a fermé le 5 avril 2015, après l'annonce de son intention de ne pas déménager à Broadway. En avril 2017, une nouvelle production allemande a ouvert au Theater des Westens à Berlin. En février 2018, la comédie musicale a déménagé au Stage Apollo Theater de Stuttgart. It was produced by Walt Disney Theatrical, the company's first musical to premiere outside the U.S. It ran for three years, becoming one of Berlin's longest-running musicals. The English-language musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame, with a revised libretto, had its debut at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California on October 28, 2014 and ran until December 7, 2014. Subsequently, the show went on to open on March 4, 2015 at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey, with more changes in the libretto. The show closed on April 5, 2015, after it was announced that it would not move to Broadway. In April 2017 a new German production of the musical opened at the Theater des Westens in Berlin. After closing in Berlin, the musical moved to Munich and Stuttgart. (en)
