- Ein Tangible User Interface ist eine anfassbare Benutzerschnittstelle, die einem Computerbenutzer die Interaktion mit der Maschine durch physische Objekte erlaubt. Oftmals wird auch das Akronym TUI verwendet (engl. Tangible User Interface). Die Bezeichnung “Graspable User Interface” wurde in einigen initialen Arbeiten verwendet, wurde aber später vollständig durch “Tangible User Interface” verdrängt. - Une interface utilisateur tangible est une interface utilisateur sur laquelle l'utilisateur interagit avec l'information numérique par le moyen de l'environnement physique. L'objectif de développement des interfaces utilisateur tangibles est d'encourager la collaboration, l'éducation et le design (conception) en donnant à l'information digitale une forme physique, profitant ainsi des capacités humaines de saisir et de manipuler des objets physiques et des matériaux. - A tangible user interface (TUI) is a user interface in which a person interacts with digital information through the physical environment. The initial name was Graspable User Interface, which is no longer used. The purpose of TUI development is to empower collaboration, learning, and design by giving physical forms to digital information, thus taking advantage of the human ability to grasp and manipulate physical objects and materials. One of the pioneers in tangible user interfaces is Hiroshi Ishii, a professor at the MIT who heads the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab. His particular vision for tangible UIs, called Tangible Bits, is to give physical form to digital information, making bits directly manipulable and perceptible. Tangible bits pursues the seamless coupling between physical objects and virtual data. (en)

- Si dicono interfacce utente tangibili, in inglese tangible user interface (TUI), quelle interfacce uomo-macchina che consentono di interagire con un sistema informatico manipolando degli oggetti fisici tangibili. Una definizione convoluta introdotta allo scopo di designare in modo formale le componenti hardware delle interfacce utente, cioè quei dispositivi comunemente noti come periferiche di input, sennonché per una serie di fortuite circostanze l'ambito di applicabilità della definizione risultò molto di più ampio di quanto si sarebbe auspicato, con risultati imprevedibili. Sebbene i dispositivi tradizionali come il mouse soddisfino pienamente la definizione l'acronimo TUI viene oggi utilizzato prevalentemente per indicare le periferiche di input “alternative” e/o l'interazione con sistemi informatici basata sull'impiego di comuni oggetti fisici (come mele o martelli), non necessariamente equipaggiati di elettronica. Профессор Хироси Исии из Массачусетского технологического института (МТИ, MIT) (США) — один из первопроходцев осязательных интерфейсов пользователя и глава группы разработчиков осязательных систем. Его особое видение ОИП, т. н. материальные биты — попытка придать цифровой информации физическое обличье, делая биты осязаемыми и потому доступными напрямую.
