Pour les articles homonymes, voir Symphonie nº 1. ) La Symphonie no 1 « Exile », Op. 17.2 est la première symphonie du compositeur américain Alan Hovhaness. La pièce a été composée en 1936 et créée par l'Orchestre symphonique de la BBC sous la direction de Leslie Heward le 26 mai 1939. L'œuvre commémore le génocide du peuple arménien, y compris la disparition de la famille paternelle de Hovhaness, pendant l'occupation turque ottomane durant la Première Guerre mondiale. La symphonie est dédiée à l'écrivain et philosophe anglais Francis Bacon. (fr)
- The Symphony No. 1, Op. 17, Exile is the first symphony by the American composer Alan Hovhaness. The piece was composed in 1936 and was premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the conductor Leslie Heward in 1939. The work commemorates the genocide of the Armenian people, including Hovhaness's paternal family, during the Ottoman Turkish occupation of World War I. The symphony is dedicated to English writer and philosopher Francis Bacon. The work's U.S. premiere was given on 6 December 1942 by the NBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski. This performance was broadcast over the radio. Around 1970 the composer replaced the central movement with a completely new one. (en)

Een zaak die overigens in de 21e eeuw nog steeds speelt; de wereld spreekt van genocide, de Turken ontkennen dat hevig. Hovhaness was rechtstreeks bij deze zaak betrokken want zijn directe familie werd ook vervolgd. Om deze zaak aan de (muzikale) kaak te stellen componeerde hij dit werk. Hoezeer de componist erbij betrokken was valt wellicht te herleiden uit de titel van het werk. Bijna al zijn symfonieën hebben subtitels, deze heeft echter symfonie nr. 1 als bijtitel. De kwestie Armenië, Turkije zou regelmatig voorkomen in Hovhaness werk. (nl)
