- La reina Isabel II del Reino Unido realizó una visita de Estado al Reino de España del 17 al 21 de octubre de 1988. Fue la primera visita oficial de un monarca británico a España, y se produjo dos años después que el rey Juan Carlos I hiciera la primera visita de Estado de un monarca español al Reino Unido. Fue la única visita oficial de Isabel II a España; las relaciones entre los dos reinos se habían visto tensas por la presencia de Gran Bretaña en Gibraltar. Al llegar a Madrid, la reina británica visitó la ciudad y la cercana residencia real en el Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, así como Sevilla y Barcelona. It was the first official visit by a British monarch to Spain, and came two years after King Juan Carlos I made the first official visit by a Spanish monarch in 80 years to the United Kingdom. It was the Queen's only official visit to Spain; relations between the two kingdoms had been fraught by Britain's presence in Gibraltar. Arriving in Madrid, the Queen visited the city and the nearby royal residence of El Escorial, as well as Seville and Barcelona. At the end of formal events, the two monarchs and their consorts sailed to Mallorca to spend three days on the island. Paul Delaney of The New York Times wrote that "The visit has captured the attention of this nation, whose relations with Britain have been marred by hostility and distrust since the British defeat of the Spanish Armada 400 years ago".
