- Seine Exzellenz Eugène Rougon (franz.: Son Excellence Eugène Rougon) ist ein Roman von Émile Zola aus dem Jahre 1876. Er ist der sechste Teil des zwanzigbändigen Rougon-Macquart-Zyklus. Er erschien zunächst als Fortsetzungsroman in der Zeitschrift Le Siècle. 1880 folgte die Buchausgabe bei Charpentier. Die Hauptperson Eugène Rougon ist der älteste Sohn von Pierre und Félicité Rougon, die dem Leser bereits aus Das Glück der Familie Rougon bekannt sind. Er ist zugleich der Bruder von Aristide Rougon/Saccard, dessen in Die Beute beschriebene Karriere er gefördert hat und der später in Das Geld wieder auftritt. Als Unterstützer von Napoleons III. Staatsstreich im Dezember 1851 hat Eugène eine Position als einflussreicher Politiker erlangt. (de)

It was translated into English by Brian Nelson in 2018. The novel is set in the highest echelons of Second Empire government. It follows the career of Eugène Rougon and a dozen or so of his cronies as they jockey for political favor and personal gain, and embraces the public and personal life of Emperor Napoleon III. The main character is Eugène Rougon (b. 1811), the eldest son of Pierre and Félicité Rougon. Eugène is first introduced in La fortune des Rougon as a key player in the coup d'état of 1851 which established Napoleon III as Emperor of the French. Eugène's maneuverings establish his parents' control over the town of Plassans and lay the foundations for solidifying the family fortune. Eugène, acknowledged as one of the prime movers in legitimizing the Emperor, has remained in Paris to further his quest for power. Eugène's brothers are Pascal, who is the main character of Le docteur Pascal, and Aristide, whose story is told in La curée and L'argent. He also has two sisters: Sidonie, who appears in La curée, and Marthe, one of the protagonists of La conquête de Plassans. (en)

Il romanzo si focalizza sui livelli più alti del governo del Secondo Impero francese, segue la carriera di Eugène Rougon e di una decina di suoi amici che speculano sui favori politici per ottenere guadagni personali e abbraccia la vita pubblica e personale dell'imperatore Napoleone III. Vice del Deux-Sèvres della Seconda Repubblica, egli contribuisce al colpo di Stato del 2 dicembre 1851 entrando poi nel Senato. All'inizio del romanzo Eugène Rougon è presidente del Consiglio di Stato.La vicenda si svolge nell'arco di tempo che va dal 1856 al 1861. Il personaggio principale è Eugène Rougon, figlio maggiore di Pierre e Félicité Rougon. Il personaggio di Eugene venne introdotto la prima volta nel romanzo La fortuna dei Rougon come elemento chiave nel colpo di Stato del 1851 che istituì Napoleone III come imperatore dei francesi. L'autore segue e descrive tutte le manovre di Eugène per stabilire il controllo dei suoi parenti sulla città di Plassans e gettare quindi le basi per la solidificazione e la fortuna della famiglia.Eugène intanto, entrato nella cerchia di Napoleone, rimane a Parigi per continuare la sua ricerca di potere. I fratelli di Eugène sono Pascal, personaggio principale del romanzo Il dottor Pascal, e Aristide, la cui storia è raccontata in La cuccagna e Il denaro. Eugène ha anche due sorelle: Sidonie, che appare in La cuccagna e Marthe, uno dei personaggi del romanzo La conquista di Plassans. (it)
