- El signe de Tanit és un símbol antropomorf present en nombroses restes arqueològiques d'origen púnic. El símbol ha estat objecte de diverses representacions, en les quals es desvetllen algunes constants: un triangle, una forma lineal, de vegades els dos braços alçats i un disc en la part superior. Les primeres representacions del signe van ser descobertes sobre una estela a Cartago a partir de principis del segle xix. Les excavacions arqueològiques han descobert representacions en altres mitjans com mosaics o també ceràmiques. Les excavacions dels de Cartago, de Sussa i de han posat en relleu la difusió particularment important del símbol en la conca occidental del mar Mediterrani, encara que els pocs descobriments sobre les terres fenícies primitives possiblement són deguts a una ocupació contínua dels llocs que fan més difícils les cerques. El símbol anomenat signe de Tanit s'ha relacionat amb la dea del mateix nom, consort de Baal Hammon en el panteó púnic dels primers descobriments. A causa de la proximitat del signe amb la creu ansada egípcia (ankh), la relació de la Cartago púnica amb civilització faraònica pot corroborar aquest origen. Va ser vist com una representació de la connexió del món terrestre amb el món celestial, les dues branques aixecades que són dos braços aixecats en signe d'oració. El signe ha estat també interpretat amb una finalitat apotropaica, ja que els púnics estaven desitjosos de protegir-se del mal d'ull.

The symbol has many variants, but the basic form consists of a disc on top of a triangle, separated by a horizontal line, like a schematic image of a person.The first representations of the sign were reported on stele unearthed on the site of Carthage from the beginning of the 19th century. Archaeological excavations have subsequently uncovered representations on other supports such as mosaics or even on ceramics. The excavations of tophet of Carthage, Sousse and Motya have highlighted the particularly important diffusion of the symbol in the western basin of the Mediterranean Sea, although the few discoveries on primitive Phoenician land may only be due to continued occupation of sites making searches more difficult. Modern scholars associate the symbol with the goddess Tanit, partner of Ba'al Hammon and the most important goddess in the Punic religion. This identification is widely, but not universally, accepted. Some scholars have argued that the symbol derived from the Egyptian ankh, on the basis of the visual similarity between the two symbols and the close connections between Punic Carthage and Egypt. The motif may have had an apotropaic purpose, intended to offer protection from the evil eye. The symbol is used in some contexts in modern Tunisia. For example, it has appeared on the Tanit d'or, the grand prize of the biennial Carthage Film Festival, since its establishment in 1966. (en)
