- Sherwin Theodore Wine (Hebrew: שמעון בן צבי, romanized: Shimon ben Tzvi; January 25, 1928 – July 21, 2007) was an American rabbi and a founding figure of Humanistic Judaism, a movement that emphasizes Jewish culture and history as sources of Jewish identity rather than belief in any gods. He was originally ordained as a Reform rabbi but later founded the Birmingham Temple, the first congregation of Humanistic Judaism, in 1963. In 1969, Wine founded the Society for Humanistic Judaism (SHJ). He was later a founder of several other Humanistic Jewish organizations, and was the founder of several humanist organizations that are not specifically Jewish (such as the Humanist Institute and the International Association of Humanist Educators, Counselors, and Leaders) as well as the co-founder of Americans for Religious Liberty, which promotes separation of church and state. He was the provost of the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism at the time of his death. Wine lectured on a wide array of topics after 1976 under the auspices of the Center for New Thinking, which he also founded. The American Humanist Association named him Humanist of the Year for 2003. D'abord rabbin juif reformé, Wine fonda le Temple Birmingham, première congrégation du judaïsme humaniste en 1963, à Birmingham (Michigan) ; le temple fut ensuite relocalisé à Farmington Hills (Michigan), et existe encore aujourd'hui. En 1969, Wine fonda la Société pour le judaïsme humaniste. Plus tard, il fonda plusieurs autres organisations relatives au judaïsme humaniste, un mouvement humaniste qui s'intéresse particulièrement à la culture juive plutôt qu'à la croyance en Dieu pour affirmer l'identité juive. Został wychowany w rodzinie konserwatywnych Żydów amerykańskich. Przyjął reformowaną smichę rabinacką. Ponieważ jednak nie potrafił pogodzić wiary w Boga z Holocaustem, założył judaizm humanistyczny, który miał opierać żydostwo na kulturze i historii, a nie wierze w Boga. Zginął w wypadku samochodowym. Do swojej śmierci działał na rzecz rozwoju International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism. (pl)

Родился в Детройте, в семье выходцев из местечек на западе России, ныне расположенных в Польше. Его родители, Гершель Венгровский и Тойбл Израэльски приехали в Детройт в начале двадцатого века. Шервин Вайн окончил общественную школу в Детройте, религиозное воспитание получал в традициях консервативного иудаизма синагоги «Шаарей-Цедек». В его семье соблюдали шаббат и кашрут. В 1985 году основал Международный институт секулярного гуманистического иудаизма. Доктрина гуманистического иудаизма изложена Вайном в программной книге «Новый путь в иудаизме» (1985), где он обосновывает необходимость отказа от религиозного содержания иудаизма, и предлагает взамен его нерелигиозную, гуманистическую альтернативу. По мнению Вайна, это радикально новый путь быть евреем, новое (секулярное) содержание еврейских национальных праздников, церемоний и ритуалов, новое (секулярное) отношение к смешанным бракам и обращению в иудаизм. Концепция Вайна повлекла за собой резкую критику со стороны многих еврейских ученых и философов. Шервин Вайн погиб в автокатастрофе в Марокко. (ru)
