A bachelor of arts degree program generally lasts three years in the European Union, Australia, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Iceland, India, Israel, New Zealand, Norway, Quebec, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland, and four years in Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Canada (outside Quebec), and the Netherlands. In the United States the bachelor of arts degree requires four years of study.
Diplomas generally give the name of the institution, signatures of officials of the institution (generally the President or Rector of the University, as well as the Secretary or Dean of the component college), the type of degree conferred, the conferring authority, and the location at which the degree is conferred. Degree diplomas generally are printed on high quality paper or parchment, use ornate lettering and often include archaic terminology or even language (e.g. Latin). (en)

De titel met specificatie of Arts wordt hier normaliter gebruikt om aan te geven dat men aan een universiteit een driejarige wetenschappelijk of academisch georiënteerde initiële bacheloropleiding heeft afgerond in de geesteswetenschappen (letteren, theologie en filosofie) of de sociale wetenschappen (bijv. economie, sociologie, psychologie, etc.). Veel studies in de sociale wetenschappen die wiskundig zijn (zoals econometrie, economie, sociologie, psychologie, etc.) verlenen echter de titel Bachelor of Science
In Nederland worden alleen personen tot deze opleiding toegelaten welke vwo of hbo hebben afgerond. Het is in sommige gevallen ook mogelijk om met een propedeuse van een verwante HBO opleiding toegelaten te worden tot de universitaire variant van deze opleiding. Na behalen van deze universitaire bachelor volgt men in de regel de universitaire opleiding tot Master of Arts. Ook kan iemand met een bachelordiploma de arbeidsmarkt opgaan.
De titel Bachelor of Arts wordt internationaal erkend en is qua niveau vergelijkbaar met de vroegere universitaire titel kandidaat. Als je de titel BA. wilt voeren, komt deze achter je naam te staan, bijvoorbeeld “P. Jansen BA.”. (nl)
