Satanaya es la madre de los Narts, es una figura de la fertilidad y a la vez también es una autoridad sobre sus hijos. Satanaya is the mother of the Narts, a fertility figure who is also an authority over her children. Satanaya is often cast in the light of a "wise woman" or matriarch, which mirrors the relative freedom of women in North Caucasian societies generally. Satanaya can be compared to the Greek Demeter, with whom she shares many traits. In Ossetian tradition, she is the daughter of Uastyrdzhi (St. George). The Chechen-Ingush version is somewhat different in that the counterpart of Satanaya, Sela-Sata, is primarily a goddess of crafts and women's work rather than a Nartic matriarch. However, many of her characteristics, including the story of her miraculous birth of a dead Nart mother and her involvement in the birth of chief hero Seska-Solsa (Sosruko), correspond closely to those of Satanaya in the other versions. Her Ossetic name is most likely of exogenous origin, with the original possibly having been preserved as Tavuna (Тавуна) in the Iron Ossetic dialect and Tavyna (Тавына) in the Digor dialect respectively. Venne seppellita, Uryzmæg suo figlio maggiore andò a vegliarla le prime due notti, la terza suo figlio minore chiese di poter vegliare la madre ma il fratello rifiutà e Hæmyts si offese ma andò a montare guardia ugualmente alla tomba. Rimasto lì per un certo tempo, fu attirato da un banchetto che si svolgeva per delle nozze, se ne andò lasciando la tomba apparentemente incustodita, ma all'interno già si trovava il fratello. Quest'ultimo colpì con la sua frusta di feltro la madre che resuscitò più bella di prima, al secondo colpo di frusta tornò nel regno dei morti. Un anno dopo , passando davanti alla tomba, sentì il pianto di un neonato, corso al villaggio, avvisò i Narti che andarono ad aprire la tomba da cui uscì la bambina chiamata Satana. (it)
