- Sarah Biffen (1784 – 2 October 1850), also known as Sarah Biffin, Sarah Beffin, or by her married name Mrs E. M. Wright, was a Victorian English painter born with no arms and only vestigial legs. She was 94 cm (37 in) tall. She was born in 1784 in Somerset. Despite her disability she learned to read and write, and to paint using her mouth. She was apprenticed to a man named Dukes, who exhibited her as an attraction throughout England. In the St. Bartholomew's Fair of 1808, she came to the attention of George Douglas, the Earl of Morton, who went on to sponsor her to receive lessons from a Royal Academy of Arts painter, William Craig. The Society of Arts awarded her a medal in 1821 for a historical miniature and the Royal Academy accepted her paintings. The Royal Family commissioned her to paint miniature portraits of them. When the Earl of Morton died in 1827, Biffen was left without a noble sponsor and she ran into financial trouble. Queen Victoria awarded her a Civil List pension and she retired to a private life in Liverpool. Some years later, she married and 12 years later tried to renew her success with the name Mrs. Wright but this was not successful. She died on 2 October 1850 at the age of 66. (en)

Toen ze 12 was stopte ze met groeien, ze was toen 94 cm. Sarah kwam uit een boerengezin uit in Somerset. Ze had geen armen, en nauwelijks noemenswaardige benen. Ondanks haar handicaps leerde Sarah lezen, en later zelfs schrijven, met haar mond. Ze kon ook naaien en knippen. Toen ze 12 was ging ze in de leer bij een man die Mr. Dukes heette. Hij stelde haar tentoon op kermissen door heel Engeland. Volgens sommige bronnen heeft Dukes Sarah leren schilderen, opdat zij een nog grotere attractie vormde. In elk geval heeft ze in deze periode wel haar schilderijen verkocht, en ze liet mensen betalen om haar naai- schilder- en tekenwerk te zien. Ze schilderde landschappen, of miniatuurportretten op ivoor. Tijdgenoten loofden haar werk, en sommige van haar werken bestaan nu nog. De graaf van Morton was overtuigd van haar talent en sponsorde haar. Nadat ze ook voor het koningshuis had geschilderd werd ze heel populair. Toen de graaf in 1827 stierf, had ze geen sponsor meer, en Sarah kwam in de financiële problemen. Koningin Victoria gaf haar een klein pensioen en ze ging rustig in Liverpool wonen. Ze trouwde, en twaalf jaar daarna probeerde ze nog een keer populair te worden onder de naam Mrs. Wright. Dit lukte niet, maar ze kreeg wel genoeg geld van haar fans om een rustige oude dag te kunnen genieten. Sarah Biffen stierf op 2 oktober, in 1850, op 66-jarige leeftijd.
