Het rijmschema is ab ab ab cc, het in Italië geïntroduceerde ottava rima of achtregelige rijm. Tezamen met het metrum geeft dit het gedicht een heroïsch karakter, maar hier gaat het volgens Yeats om een spirituele reis. Zijn latere gedicht Byzantium opgenomen in zijn in 1933 verschenen dichtbundel The winding stair an other poems is een aanvulling hierop. (nl)

Den har även tolkats till svenska som Segling till Byzantium och Till Bysans. Den består av fyra strofer på ottave rime och skildrar en resa till Byzantion (Konstantinopel), som blir avstamp för funderingar kring åldrande, konst och jakten på odödlighet. Yeats hade tidigare beskrivit hur han såg Byzantion som en symbol för andligt sökande och en plats där religiöst, estetiskt och praktiskt liv förenades.
