- Le Festival international d'art contemporain de Royan fut organisé dans cette ville de Charente-Maritime de 1964 à 1977. C'était une manifestation pluri-disciplinaire annuelle, qui rassemblait :
* un important festival de musique contemporaine ;
* des spectacles de danse ;
* du théâtre ;
* du cinéma ;
* un Salon international de la recherche photographique ;
* des expositions d'arts plastiques et des arts d'Orient, d'Extrême-Orient et d'Afrique. Créé en 1963 par le docteur , le festival était avant tout axé sur la musique contemporaine. De 1964 à 1972, son directeur artistique fut Claude Samuel, puis Harry Halbreich de 1973 à 1977. Le festival avait lieu chaque année durant une semaine aux environs de Pâques. Très vite, par sa production musicale, le festival de Royan devint aussi célèbre que ceux de Donaueschingen ou de Venise. Jusqu'en 1971 a eu lieu, dans le cadre de ce festival le Concours international de piano Olivier Messiaen. En 1972, il a été remplacé par un concours de flûte. (fr)
- The Royan Festival (or more fully in French the Festival international d'art contemporain de Royan) was held in Royan, in the department of Charente-Maritime in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwest France from 1964 to 1977. It was a multi-disciplinary annual event, bringing together:
* an important contemporary music festival;
* dance performances;
* theater;
* movies;
* international exhibitions of photographic research;
* exhibitions of visual arts and arts of the East, the Far East and Africa. Created in 1963 by Dr. Bernard Gachet, the festival was primarily focused on contemporary music. Its artistic director was Claude Samuel from 1964 to 1972 then Harry Halbreich from 1973 to 1977. The festival was held annually for one week around Easter. Soon, its musical production, the Festival de Royan became as famous as those of Donaueschingen and Venice. The Olivier Messiaen international piano competition was part of the festival until 1971. In 1972, it was replaced by a flute competition. (en)

Основной специализацией фестиваля была современная академическая музыка (хотя, помимо концертной программы, в рамках фестиваля проходили также выставки фотографии, визуального и пластического искусства, спектакли и кинопоказы); неслучайно руководителями фестиваля были музыковеды Клод Самюэль (до 1972 г.) и (с 1973 г.). На концертах фестиваля в разные годы прозвучали премьерные исполнения таких важных произведений, как «Терретектор» Янниса Ксенакиса и «De natura sonoris» Кшиштофа Пендерецкого (1966), Квадривиум Бруно Мадерны (1969), Концерт для виолончели с оркестром Юн Исана (1976), Третья симфония Хенрика Гурецкого (1977), сочинения Мориса Оана, Тристана Мюрая, , Франко Донатони, Брайана Фернихоу, , Вольфганга Рима и других. В 1966—1971 гг. в рамках фестиваля проходил также международный конкурс пианистов имени Оливье Мессиана; среди победителей — известные музыканты Мишель Бероф (1966) и Хокон Эустбё (1971).
