Rifts describes itself as an "advanced" role-playing game and not an introduction for those new to the concept. Palladium continues to publish books for the Rifts series, with about 80 books published between 1990 and 2011. Rifts Ultimate Edition was released in August 2005 and designed to update the game with Palladium's incremental changes to its system, changes in the game world, and additional information and character types. Il exploite la notion de Megaverse (contraction de mega et universe), qui désigne l'ensemble des dimensions (mondes parallèles, et notamment l'ensemble des mondes développés dans les jeux Palladium) pouvant communiquer accidentellement entre elles par des failles (rifts). Un jeu de rôle spécifique, Rifts Chaos Earth (Palladium Books, 2003), se déroule juste après le cataclysme, tandis que Rifts se déroule environ 300 ans après. En avril 2015, annonce une version de Rifts pour le système Savage Worlds, mais Palladium n'arrête pas pour autant la gamme. Une campagne de financement participatif a été lancée le 26 avril 2016. Rifts fa da scena ed "incrocio" per una serie di altri giochi della Palladium, ambientati in diversi universi collegati ai "rift" (una sorta di portali dimensionali) presenti sulla Terra. Questi portali conducono ad altri spazi, tempi e realtà che la Palladium definisce il "Rifts Megaverse". Rifts si definisce come un gioco di ruolo "avanzato" e non di introduzione ai neofiti. La Palladium continua a pubblicare volumi per la serie Rifts, con circa 80 libri pubblicati tra il 1990 ed il 2011. Rifts Ultimate Edition è stato pubblicato nell'agosto del 2005 e progettato per aggiornare il gioco ai vari cambiamenti che la Palladium aveva apportato al sistema di gioco, all'ambientazione e per aggiungere informazioni e tipi di personaggio. Sedan spelet skapades har fler än 250 000 exemplar av den ursprungliga regelboken sålts och över 60 böcker har skrivits till det. Rifts fungerar som en brygga för en brett antal andra spel från Palladium. Spelens olika miljöer sammanfogas genom de så kallade "sprickor" (en: rifts) i rummet, tiden och verkligheten. Genom Palladiums universella strids- och konverteringssystem kan rollpersoner och element från olika spel interagera och kombineras på nya sätt vilket resulterar i en helt unik rollspelsmiljö som Palladium kallar "Rifts Megaverse" (ungefär Rifts megaversum på svenska), vilket även är ett registrerat varumärke. Rifts innehåller ämnen som vissa läsare invänder sig emot som våld, magi, droger, galenskap och ondska. Varje Rifts-bok har en förbehållstext och varning om att boken är olämplig för unga läsare. Spelet beskriver sig själv som ett "avancerat" rollspel och inte ett introduktionsspel för nybörjare inom rollspelshobbyn. Palladium uppskattar att fler än 1,5 miljoner människor har spelat Rifts och flera gånger det antalet har hört talas om det. Palladium fortsätter att publicera böcker till spelet. Rifts Ultimate Edition släpptes i augusti 2005 och var uppdaterad med Palladiums stegvis växande förändringar av dess system - förändringar i spelvärlden och ytterligare information, samt rollpersontyper.
