- Ray Shulman (* 8. Dezember 1949 in Portsmouth, England) ist ein Musiker und Gründungsmitglied der Progressive-Rock-Band Gentle Giant. 1966 gründete er unter dem Pseudonym „Simon Dupree“ mit seinen Brüdern Derek und Phil Shulman die Popband Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Zu den Mitgliedern der Gruppe gehörte zeitweise auch Reginald Dwight, der später als Elton John bekannt wurde. Mit Kites gelangte die Gruppe 1967 bis auf Platz 9 der britischen Hitparade. Weitere nennenswerte Erfolge erzielten Simon Dupree and the Big Sound nicht, so dass die Shulmanbrüder sich 1970 in Gentle Giant umbenannten und ihren Stil radikal änderten. Wie seine Brüder war auch Ray Shulman ein Multiinstrumentalist und spielte Bass, Trompete, Violine, Schlagzeug, Perkussion und Gitarre. Er war einer der Hauptkomponisten von Gentle Giant und vornehmlich deren Bassist. Nachdem sich Gentle Giant aufgelöst hatten, schrieb Ray zunächst von 1982 bis 1986 Musik für Fernsehen und Kino. Ab 1986 produzierte Shulman mit The Sugarcubes Songs wie Life’s too good, The Sundays' Reading, writing and Arithmetic oder auch Ian McCullochs Candleland. Diese Lieder hatten großen kommerziellen Erfolg, vor allen Dingen die ersten beiden, die über 1 Million Mal in den Plattenläden verkauft wurden. Außerdem spielte Ray den Bass auf dem Album 69 von (er ist auf den Liedern Crazy Blue, Baby Milk Snatcher und Spermwhale Tripover zu hören). Er spielte auch auf dem Album Americana von Kane. Später nahm Ray zwei Platten unter dem Pseudonym „Head Doctor“ bei Millennium Records auf. Er erscheint auch auf einem Techno-Kollektion-Album. Ray Shulman schrieb für PC-Spiele wie Privateer 2: The Darkening oder Azrael’s Tears die Hintergrundmusik. - Raymond Shulman (born 8 December 1949) is a Scottish musician, and the youngest of three brothers in progressive rock band Gentle Giant. Shulman was born in Portsmouth. His father was a trumpet player in a jazz band, and that was the first instrument he learned to play. He went on to learn violin and guitar and was primed for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, but his brother Derek convinced him to join his band Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, which later evolved into Gentle Giant. During Shulman's recording days in the band as a bass guitarist, his virtuosity often compared to popular players such as Yes's Chris Squire. Yet, like Genesis's Mike Rutherford, Shulman was quite adept at other instruments as well. Similar to the role of the rhythmist in the art-rock band Family, Shulman sometimes doubled on violin, recorder, trumpet, acoustic and electric guitars. Shulman and keyboardist-bandmate Kerry Minnear composed or co-wrote much of the music for Gentle Giant. Shulman was in Gentle Giant from the beginning in 1970 to the last tour in 1980. He went on to become a record producer in the late 1980s and 1990s, working with the Sugarcubes, the Sundays, the Trash Can Sinatras, and Ian McCulloch, The Defects among others. Aos dez, ganhou sua primeira guitarra elétrica.Com seu irmão Derek, formou várias bandas (primeiramente, "The Howling Wolves", depois tornando-se "The Road Runners", e finalmente "Simon Dupree and the Big Sound", tocando Rhythm and blues nas cercanias de Portsmouth). Durante sua permanência no Gentle Giant, Shulman, no baixo elétrico, rivalizava com outro virtuoso da época, Chris Squire, do Yes. Além do contrabaixo, Ray tocava violino, viola, flauta doce (soprano), violão de 6 e 12 cordas, trompete, além de instrumentos de percussão.
