- Robert Guthrie est un médecin américain né le 28 juin 1916, mort à Seattle le 24 juin 1995, Robert Guthrie est considéré aujourd'hui dans le monde entier comme le grand pionnier des tests de masse chez les nouveau-nés. Son deuxième enfant était atteint de retard mental et l'une de ses nièces était atteinte de phénylcétonurie, faute d'avoir été dépistée à temps. Il a alors procédé à de nombreuses expériences qui ont enfin conduit au développement du test de Guthrie, particulièrement simple et bon marché : quelques gouttes de sang sont prélevées au talon ou au doigt du bébé, sur un papier absorbant. Son test est encore aujourd'hui utilisé dans de très nombreux pays où il a été généralisé à tous les nouveau-nés. En France, le test a été présenté en 1963 et s'est généralisé vers 1980. Son test a permis de dépister à temps des dizaines de milliers d'enfants atteints de phénylcétonurie, de les faire bénéficier d'un régime très pauvre en phénylalanine et de les préserver d'un retard mental inéluctable. Guthrie also pioneered the collection of whole blood on specially designed filter paper, commonly known as "Guthrie cards" as a sample medium that could be easily collected, transported and tested. Although Guthrie is best known for developing the test for phenylketonuria, he worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the need to screen for treatable conditions and adapted his method to early screening tests for galactosemia and maple syrup urine disease. Lui ideò questo sistema per l'utilizzo in circostanze neonatali, dove continua ad essere utilizzato per oltre il 95% dei neonati, ma in seguito il suo utilizzo è cresciuto andando ad interessare quasi ogni campo di raccolta del sangue. Test di Guthrie Il Test di Guthrie è a tutt'oggi un importante strumento, e i cartoncini di sangue essiccato sono diventati un sistema molto utilizzato, con ben più del 90% dei neonati americani dal 2000 in poi screenati con questo sistema. Guthrie rinunciò a brevettare o accettare royalties per questa sua idea. Anche grazie a questa sua generosa scelta, il prezzo dei test fu minimo e fu possibile agli ospedali realizzare lo screening per la diagnosi precoce della fenilchetonuria su larga scala. (it)
