- Ochranné znaky, případně též rozlišovací znaky jsou v mezinárodním humanitárním právu znaky, které ve válečném konfliktu označují chráněné osoby a objekty, na něž je zapovězeno útočit. Přestože jejich základní význam lze shrnout jako „nestřílejte“ nebo „neútočte“, přesné podmínky se liší v závislosti na příslušném znamení a okolnostech jeho použití. Forma, tvar a barva těchto znaků jsou definovány příslušnými mezinárodními smlouvami. Obvykle je lze snadno nakreslit, aby i improvizované použití bylo co nejjednodušší, a byly vybrány tak, aby byli za všech okolností co nejvíce stručné, rozpoznatelné a viditelné. Používání ochranných značek je omezeno na ozbrojené konflikty a mají je používat pouze způsobilé organizace nebo skupiny k označení svých zaměstnanců, vozidel, budov a dalších objektů. Zneužití ochranných značek je porušením mezinárodního humanitárního práva a je trestné podle vnitrostátního práva všech zemí, které jsou smluvními stranami příslušných dohod. Například v ČR je možné za trestný čin Zneužití mezinárodně uznávaných a státních znaků uložit až výjimečný trest. (cs)
- Schutzzeichen sind Symbole, die in bewaffneten Konflikten unter dem Schutz des humanitären Völkerrechts stehende Personen und Objekte kennzeichnen. Es sind bewusst einfach gehaltene Zeichen, die ohne Zusätze weithin erkennbar sind, und im Bedarfsfall auch improvisiert hergestellt werden können. Ihre Verwendung als Schutzzeichen ist auf bewaffnete Konflikte beschränkt. Sie dürfen nur von bestimmten Organisationen oder Personengruppen für ihr Personal, ihre Gebäude und Fahrzeuge sowie ihre sonstige Ausstattung, und zur Kennzeichnung von festgelegten Einrichtungen verwendet werden. Es besteht in den meisten Fällen eine Verpflichtung, zutreffende Schutzzeichen zu führen beziehungsweise anzubringen, in einigen Fällen ist ihre Verwendung freigestellt. Jede nicht dem vorgesehenen Zweck entsprechende Verwendung von Schutzzeichen ist ein Verstoß gegen das humanitäre Völkerrecht und steht in allen Vertragsstaaten der entsprechenden Abkommen unter Strafe. - Un emblème protecteur est un symbole utilisé pendant un conflit armé pour indiquer que les personnes ou les objets sont protégés par les traités du droit international humanitaire (DIH). Même si la signification générale de ces emblèmes est « Ne tirez pas ! » ou « N'attaquez pas ! », il existe des nuances selon les emblèmes et les circonstances de leur emploi. Les motifs, la forme et la couleur de ces emblèmes sont définis dans le DIH. En général, ils sont faciles à dessiner afin de pouvoir être représentés soudainement et ils sont à la fois simples, reconnaissables et visibles en toutes circonstances. L'utilisation d'emblèmes protecteurs est réservée aux conflits armés. Les emblèmes ne peuvent être affichés que par des organisations ou des groupes éligibles qui souhaitent désigner ainsi leur personnel, leurs véhicules, leurs bâtiments ou d'autres objets.
