- Picayune war die Bezeichnung für das Halbstück des Spanischen Reals ab etwa dem 18. Jahrhundert in den Gebieten der heutigen US-Bundesstaaten Louisiana und Florida. Die Bezeichnung wurde wohl von der Bezeichnung für eine kleine provençalische Kupfer-Münze, dem von den dort im 18. Jahrhundert siedelnden Franzosen eingeführt. Die Münze war auch in den Vereinigten Staaten von 1793 bis 1857 ein zulässiges Zahlungsmittel. Während dieser Zeit galt das spanische 8 Reales-Stück (das dem Gewicht eines Talers entsprach) einen US-Dollar. Der Picayune entsprach somit 6¼ US-Cent, was dazu führte, dass in einigen Teilen der südlichen US-Bundesstaaten der Name Picayune auf das 5-Cent-Stück übertragen wurde. Ein Hinweis auf dieses Zahlungsmittel findet sich noch im Namen der US-amerikanischen Tageszeitung The Times-Picayune, die ursprünglich einen Picayune kostete. (de)

Το όνομά του προέρχεται από το γαλλικό picaillon, το οποίο προέρχεται από το Προβηγκιανό picaioun , το όνομα ενός μικρού χάλκινου νομίσματος της Σαβοΐας. Κατ' επέκταση το πικαγιούνε μπορεί να σημαίνει "κάτι μικρής αξίας". Παρεφθαρμένη η λέξη στα Ελληνικά είναι πεκούνια. Εκτός από τη χρήση στα Ισπανικά εδάφη, το πικαγιούν και άλλα Ισπανικά νομίσματα, χρησιμοποιήθηκε σε όλες τις αποικιακές Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Τα Ισπανικά δολάρια έγιναν νόμιμο χρήμα στις ΗΠΑ με πράξη στις 9 Φεβρουαρίου 1793. Παρέμειναν έτσι μέχρι την απονομισματοποίηση στις 21 Φεβρουαρίου 1857. Το όνομα τού νομίσματος εμφανίστηκε για πρώτη φορά στη Φλόριντα και τη Λουιζιάνα, όπου η αξία του άξιζε περίπου 6 1/4 σεντ και τού οποίου το όνομα χρησιμοποιήθηκε μερικές φορές στη θέση των νικέλινων νομισμάτων των ΗΠΑ. Η εφημερίδα thw Picayne, μετά Time-Pecayne, που εκδόθηκε τη δεκαετία του 1930, πήρε το όνομά της από το νόμισμα. Μία πόλη στο Μισισιπή έχει το όνομα Picayne. (el)
- A picayune was a Spanish coin, worth half a real or one sixteenth of a dollar. Its name derives from the French picaillon, which is itself from the Provençal picaioun, the name of an unrelated small copper coin from Savoy. By extension, picayune can mean "trivial" or "of little value". Aside from being used in Spanish territories, the picayune and other Spanish currency was used throughout the colonial United States. Spanish dollars were made legal tender in the U.S. by an act on February 9, 1793. They remained so until demonetization on February 21, 1857. The coin's name first appeared in Florida and Louisiana, where its value was nominally one sixteenth of a dollar, i.e. 6+1⁄4 cents, and whose name was sometimes used in place of the U.S. nickel. A newspaper published in New Orleans since the 1830s, the Times-Picayune (originally The Picayune), was named after the coin. A city in southern Mississippi has the name Picayune. (en)
