The Tyrrell Street school embodies a synthesis of the history of three of the most historically important schools in Newcastle; Newcastle East Public School, , Newcastle High School and their offshoots. in 2016, 200 years of history was celebrated by past students of Newcastle High School on the front lawn of Newcastle East Public School, notably with ex-Prime Minister Julia Gillard in attendance.
