- Menehune je označení bytostí popisovaných v legendách původních obyvatel Havajských ostrovů. Jsou líčeni jako malí lidé, vysocí necelý metr, s groteskně zdeformovanými rudými obličeji. Žijí v odlehlých hustě zalesněných oblastech a vycházejí z úkrytů pouze v noci, živí se rybami a lesními plody (banány, pandány, borůvky 'ohelo, kořeny dračinky). Nedovedou sice rozdělávat oheň, ale jsou považováni za zručné řemeslníky a stavitele, jejich údajným dílem je megalitická hráz na ostrově Kauai nebo terasy na neobydleném Neckerově ostrově. Hlavním nepřítelem Menehune je soví bůh . Existují spory o to, zda jsou Menuhune pouhým výtvorem fantazie nebo zda je vyprávění o nich vzpomínkou na původní protopolynéské obyvatele ostrovů, podrobené a asimilované pozdější osidlovací vlnou moderních (Alii). Argumentem pro tuto teorii je podobnost s tahitským označením nejnižší společenské vrstvy jako manahune i výsledky sčítání lidu z roku 1820, podle něhož tehdy žilo na ostrově Kauai šedesát pět Menehune.Poslední příslušníci se odstěhovali na ostrov Nihoa, kde po nich zůstaly kamenné terasy. Ostrov je nyní neobývaný. Figurky Menehune patří k populárním suvenýrům pro návštěvníky Havaje, jako reklamu pro lety na Havaj je využívala také společnost United Airlines. (cs)
- Die Menehune (hawaiisch, auch melehune) sind das „kleine Volk“ von Hawaiʻi. Diese Figuren der hawaiischen Mythologie sollen kleine Lebewesen in menschlicher Gestalt sein, die magische Kräfte besitzen. Sie sollen auf allen Inseln von Hawaiʻi verbreitet sein, dabei besonders auf Kauaʻi. Sehen kann man sie aber so gut wie nie, weil sie sich meist tief im Wald und an abgelegenen Orten verstecken. Sie sind hervorragende Baumeister, die über Nacht wahre Meisterwerke vollbringen können. Es taucht immer wieder die Vermutung auf, dass die Menehune nicht einfach der Fantasie entsprungen sind, sondern dass die Legende einen tatsächlichen historischen Hintergrund hat. Die Menehune sollen die ersten Siedler auf Hawaiʻi gewesen sein, die sich zwischen 1 und 350 n. Chr. auf Hawaiʻi niedergelassen hatten. Als die Insel um 1100 von Menschen aus Tahiti in Besitz genommen wurde, wurden die Menehune durch die körperlich größeren Eindringlinge unterdrückt. Aus Angst vor den neuen Herren zogen sie sich an weit abgelegene, schwer zugängliche Orte zurück. Certains historiens ont théorisé que les Menehunes proviendraient d'une première vague d'occupations des îles Hawaiiennes par des migrants venus des Îles Marquises. Une vague d'immigration postérieure de peuples originaires de Tahiti ancêtres actuels des Hawaïens auraient opprimé ces premiers habitants qui se seraient retranchés et cachés dans les montagnes pour survivre. Les partisans de cette théorie soulignent un recensement de la population de Kauai où 65 habitants se seraient déclarés menehune. En 1951, les Hawaïens qui extraient des rochers à Diamond Head affirment que chaque nuit, les Menehunes défont le travail que les hommes accomplissent durant la journée. - Menehune are a mythological race of dwarf people in Hawaiian tradition who are said to live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of the Hawaiian Islands, hidden and far away from human settlements. The Menehune are described as superb craftspeople. They built temples (heiau), fishponds, roads, canoes, and houses. Some of these structures that Hawaiian folklore attributed to the Menehune still exist. They are said to have lived in Hawaiʻi before settlers arrived from Polynesia many centuries ago. Their favorite food is the maiʻa (banana), and they also like fish. Legend has it that the Menehune will only appear during night hours, in order to build masterpieces. But if they fail to complete their work in the length of the night, they will leave it unoccupied. No one but their children and humans connected to them are able to see the Menehune. (en)
