L'elevata deportanza avrebbe permesso alla vettura di correre senza alettoni. L'auto si presentò nella classica livrea automobilistica verde britannica dopo l'abbandono dello sponsor John Player Special. Durante alcune sessioni di test Mario Andretti riferì che in velocità la vettura si comportava bene, ma in frenata ed in curva perdeva deportanza in modo allarmante riguadagnandola in modo improvviso. Il team provò a montare alettoni, ma la situazione non cambiò. Andretti corse tre Gran Premi sulla Lotus 80, mentre il compagno di squadra Reutemann si rifiutò di pilotarla e rimase alla guida del modello 79. Colin Chapman ammise che la vettura progettata non era la meraviglia che ci si sarebbe aspettati, e dopo il terzo posto in Spagna e le gare in Belgio e a Monaco tornò ad utilizzare il modello 79. Le soluzioni aerodinamiche espresse nella Lotus 80 saranno riutilizzate nel successivo modello 88. (it)
