- The Light Division was a light infantry division of the British Army. Its origins lay in "Light Companies" formed during the late 18th century, to move at speed over inhospitable terrain and protect a main force with skirmishing tactics. These units took advantage of then-new technology in the form of rifles, which allowed it to emphasise marksmanship, and were aimed primarily at disrupting and harassing enemy forces, in skirmishes before the main forces clashed. Formed in 1803, during the Napoleonic Wars, the Light Division was raised thrice thereafter: during the Crimean War, the First World War and from 1968 to 2007. Some light infantry units remained outside the Light Division. (en)

Division administrative de l'infanterie anglaise, la Division est créée en 1968 par la fusion de deux brigades administratives : les Light Infantry Brigade et Green Jackets Brigade. À cette époque, elle comprend deux grands régiments d'infanterie : Light Infantry avec quatre bataillons et Royal Green Jackets avec trois bataillons. L'année suivante, elle perdit déjà un bataillon et, en 1993, le gouvernement britannique décida d'en éliminer encore deux autres. C'est pourquoi fin 2004 la division légère présente la forme suivante : deux bataillons du Light Infantry et deux autres du Royal Green Jackets. En 2005, elle accueille deux nouvelles unités : le Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry et le Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry. En 2007, l’administration britannique fusionne toutes les unités pour former un super régiment de cinq bataillons d'infanterie légère baptisé The Rifles.

Они были предназначены в первую очередь для нанесения урона неприятелю в ходе перестрелок до столкновения основных сил. Созданная в 1803 году, во время наполеоновских войн, Лёгкая дивизия после этого трижды воссоздавалась заново: во время Крымской войны, в Первую мировую войну и с 1968 по 2007 год.
